Platform Recruitment is partnering with a South East England product design consultancy to recruit a Senior Design Engineer / Mechanical Design Engineer. You will own design work from concept to manufacturing-ready detail drawings, collaborating across life sciences, consumer and entertainment projects.

The role requires a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design and at least four years of relevant industrial experience, with strong CAD and manufacturing process knowledge.

Qualifications

• Three or more years of experience in product design/development (consultancy experience and MedTech exposure advantageous).
• 1st or 2:1 Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Product Design.
• Solid understanding of mechanical engineering principles.
• Deep knowledge of materials and plastic/metal production processes.
• Experience prototyping and manufacturing concepts, including electronics integration.

Responsibilities

• Establish a clear path to meeting customer requirements with stakeholders.
• Carry out detailed mechanical design using traditional and non-traditional production methods.
• Support research, development and testing on live projects.
• Assemble and debug prototype development rigs.
• Collaborate with manufacturing partners (CNC, sheet metal, welding, moulding).
• Produce functional and user requirement specs for new projects.
• Follow internal QA structure and revision control.
• Create detailed, toleranced 2D drawings in SolidWorks to ISO standards.
• Generate bills of materials and coordinate with manufacturers.
• Plan project timelines with good design process management.
• Assist in project proposals and client pitches.
• Knowledge of ISO 13485 is a bonus.

Senior Design Engineer / Mechanical Design Engineer

Product design consultancy | South East England

An established, award-winning product development consultancy is expanding its design team and looking to add a talented mechanical or product design engineer. The consultancy has a strong track record delivering design solutions across insight generation, product design, hardware and software development, prototyping and production, working across sectors from medical and consumer to toys and social entertainment.

As part of a wider company expansion, the team is growing at its design and development facility in the South East.

The Role

You will join a dynamic team within an energetic product design consultancy, taking a high level of ownership for your own work and maintaining enthusiasm and commitment across demanding project timescales.

Working alongside the industrial and product design team, you will help turn conceptual ideas into innovative, working, injection-moulded or mechanical solutions. You should be confident producing manufacturing-ready CAD data and hold a solid understanding of major manufacturing processes, with the ability to oversee and check development as it moves through production.

You will create and execute product concepts across a range of markets, from life sciences to social entertainment, supporting the wider team with research, development and testing on live projects. A degree in Product Design or Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent), plus at least four years of relevant industrial experience, is expected.

Key Responsibilities

• Establish a clear path to meeting customer requirements, liaising with stakeholders to ensure the best possible product outcome


• Carry out detailed mechanical engineering design using traditional and non-traditional production methods, e.g. technical moulded components, low-cost sheet metal, castings, pressings, extrusions and other rapid manufacturing methods


• Support the team with research, development and testing on live projects


• Assemble and debug prototype development rigs


• Liaise with manufacturing partners providing services such as CNC machining, sheet metal fabrication, welding and moulding


• Produce functional and user requirement specification documentation for new projects


• Follow internal quality management structure and document revision control


• Create detailed, toleranced 2D component and assembly drawings in SolidWorks to ISO standards, ensuring accuracy and completeness of drawings, files, engineering records, prints and project tasks


• Generate bills of materials and work collaboratively with selected manufacturing partners


• Plan project timelines while adhering to good design process management
  
• Support the creation of project proposals and client pitch presentations


• Knowledge of ISO 13485 is a bonus but not essential

Key Requirements

• Sound grasp of mechanical engineering principles
