Job description

Product Design Engineer
Glasgow (Hybrid - minimum 3 days on site)

Flexible Working Hours
Salary: DOE

NT Engineering & Manufacturing are proud to be supporting their client in their need for a Product Design Engineer to join their growing Engineering team in Glasgow.

Our client are a small business with a 60+ strong team, with 12 product design engineers currently in place reporting up to the Head of Engineering - and this is one of two additional senior heads being brought in as the business continues to expand. This is a growth hire, not a replacement, with real career development on offer as the team scales further.

This is a busy, varied role with genuine autonomy and ownership, centred on the design and engineering of products that make a real difference in the environments they're used in - specifically within the mental health sector, where safety, dignity and user experience all matter in equal measure. Reporting to the Head of Engineering, you'll take real ownership of projects and run with them independently, from initial concept through to market launch and ongoing lifecycle support.

We're looking for someone with 5+ years' experience who can hit the ground running - this isn't an entry-level or junior position. If you're a senior product design engineer who wants your work to have genuine human impact, with the autonomy to properly own what you design, this is a role worth exploring.

What you'll be doing:
  • Leading the design and development of new products and significant product enhancements, from ideation and concept generation through to detailed design and prototyping
  • Championing user-centric design methodologies throughout the product development lifecycle, with a deep understanding of user needs, behaviours and pain points within the mental health sector
  • Facilitating product and process improvement projects through iterative design and redesign, focused on user experience, manufacturability and product quality
  • Conducting design research and analysis — competitor analysis, material exploration and trend identification — to inform product decisions
  • Developing and refining product specifications, working closely with engineering, operations and marketing to translate user insights and business requirements into real design solutions
  • Ensuring the product range meets the latest regulations (fire, acoustics) against relevant British standards, including facilitating external testing
  • Designing and building test plans that incorporate user testing and voice of the customer to validate design decisions
  • Creating technical documentation for the wider business, external partners and customers — operating procedures, installation instructions, how-to guides and O&M manuals
  • Supporting product manufacturing set-up with external suppliers, and supporting ongoing manufacturing activity to ensure design intent is maintained through production
  • Resolving technical product issues using root cause analysis (RCA), often feeding directly into design revisions
Experience required:
  • 5+ years' proven experience designing and developing products, with a strong portfolio showcasing your design process and outcomes
  • Background in a similarly regulated or certified environment strongly preferred -medical devices, childcare products, or comparable sectors
  • Strong understanding of the end-to-end design process, from concept through to detailed engineering and manufacturing, with hands-on knowledge of manufacturing processes (injection moulding, sheet metal, machining, etc.) and an eye for DFM/DFA
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (Solidworks strongly preferred), with the ability to produce clear technical drawings and manage Bills of Materials
  • Experience with design risk assessment methods (e.g. FMEA) and change/approval processes that maintain design integrity
  • Strong prototyping and workshop-based fabrication skills
  • Excellent communication skills, able to articulate design rationale to a range of stakeholders
Why this role?
  • Genuine ownership and autonomy - you'll run with projects independently, not just execute someone else's brief
  • Join a growing team (12 design engineers and counting) with real, structured career development on offer
  • Real, tangible human impact -designing products for environments where safety and dignity matter
  • Hybrid working -minimum 3 days on site, Glasgow
