Job summary

Cummins is seeking an enthusiastic Product Design & Validation student to join our On-Highway Engineering Services team in Darlington for a 12-month placement starting Summer 2027. The role offers exposure to a global engineering environment and hands-on experience in design specs, validation, and product support.

You will gain experience across design and safety reviews, collaborate with Operations, Sourcing and Marketing, and learn to manage test plans and reports as part of the validation

Qualifications

  • 12-month industry placement as part of degree program.
  • Proven ability to develop design specifications considering cost, weight, performance.
  • Ability to verify designs using data and testing, interpret results and drive resolutions.
  • Experience contributing to design and safety reviews and product support.

  • Create design specs considering application, cost, weight, performance, and manufacturability.
  • Verify designs with data and tests; interpret results and drive resolutions.
  • Develop engineering solutions and participate in design/safety reviews.
  • Support New Product Introduction and current product support activities.
  • Collaborate with Operations, Sourcing and Marketing to meet stakeholder requirements.
  • Perform validation tasks including record keeping, test plans, and reports.

Job description

We are looking for an enthusiastic Product Design & Validation student to join our team specializing in Engineering for our On-Highway Engineering Services in Darlington. During your placement with us, you will learn how a major global organization operates, gaining the tools and exposure you will need to become an expert in the industry.

This role is available to candidates who qualify for a placement year and will commence in Summer 2027.

External Qualifications and Competencies

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • In this role you will assist with the creation of design specifications considering application, cost, weight, performance, product life, ease of manufacture, ease of assembly and service requirements
  • Verify designs using analytical data and/or functional testing, interpret results, drive resolutions and assess risk
  • Apply engineering and/or scientific skills and knowledge to develop experience in creating engineering solutions. Development of these skills will enable you to participate in and contribute to design and safety reviews
  • Support the investigations into New Products Introduction and Current Product support
  • Collaborate with other functions such as Operations, Sourcing and Marketing, to ensure stakeholders requirements are met throughout the design and development process
  • Validation tasks will also include record keeping, studying test cell data, making test plans, drafting test reports
Additional Responsibilities Unique to this Position

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • We are looking for a wide range of applicants studying towards a Bachelor or Master's degree from across all Engineering & STEM related subjects and the degree programme must include a 12-month industry placement
  • Has clear thought processes and can show a lucid approach to tasks, obstacles, hobbies etc
  • PC literacy – knowledge of MS Office and be experience in 3D modelling software such as Catia, Creo, Solidworks etc
  • Has experience in, and can demonstrate, relevant examples of Cummins core values e.g. voluntary work, community involvement activities, working with disadvantaged groups, charity related support, delivering extraordinary results, teamwork, skills and outside education experiences
