Job Title Producer/editor, Video Department

The Economist is looking for a producer/editor to join our editorial-video department, to produce online, studio-based discussion programmes. Working closely with our Series Producer, you will be part of a team responsible for planning and producing two programmes a week, featuring senior journalists from The Economist and prominent guests.

The ideal candidate will have worked as a journalist, be an experienced editor and, ideally, a videographer too. Guest booking, briefing contributors and research will be a significant part of the role.

We’re looking for a candidate who is excited by the prospect of delivering editorially-rigorous and engaging programmes that provide clear explanations and thorough analysis of current affairs. The programmes will be varied and therefore candidates should have experience in, and a passion for, foreign affairs, politics, finance, business and technology.

Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the creation and delivery of weekly programmes that appeal to key target audiences, in line with The Economist’s strategy to retain and attract subscribers
• Edit video clips and packages, create and commission graphics and conduct picture research for weekly programmes
• Assist in the pre-production and planning of programmes, including running orders, and in the briefing of contributors and hosts
• Alongside the studio manager, play an active role in the setup and smooth running of filming, including camera operation, monitoring feeds and equipment management
• Bid for, and secure, interviews with high-profile guests
• Help shape programme planning and proactively pitch ideas
• Edit, using Premiere Pro, compelling video cutdowns for promotion on The Economist app and social media as well as for marketing purposes

Requirements:

• Experience in TV, video or podcast journalism and current affairs or news
• Ability to edit short-video packages to quick deadlines, using Premiere Pro
• A solid understanding of professional camera systems (especially Blackmagics)
• Knowledge of The Economist’s brand and digital content, with a clear understanding of what sets our journalism apart
• A proactive and self-motivated attitude, with a willingness to take direction from senior producers and series producer

Advantageous:

• Experience producing interviews with high-profile guests
• Experience using After Effects and Photoshop

The role will be based in our London office, with at least three days per week in the office.

Task:

Pick a recent article from The Economist and create a 20-minute-long script structure for a conversational, studio-based news programme
