Job summary

Southern Water is seeking a maintenance technician to help proactively maintain and repair water supply plant and equipment across multiple sites. The role requires a Level 3 NVQ in mechanical or electrical disciplines and a full UK driving licence, with standby duties on a 1-in-6 rota.

You will diagnose faults, perform preventive maintenance, and ensure regulatory compliance while providing technical support to contractors and internal teams.

Qualifications

  • Level 3 NVQ Mechanical and/or Electrical qualification required.
  • Full UK driving licence required.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake reactive and planned maintenance of plant and equipment, including pumps, motors, gearboxes, starters, and variable speed drives.
  • Install and commission new plant and equipment, ensuring compliance with standards and safety regulations.
  • Respond to alarms and diagnose faults, carrying out repairs or escalating issues promptly to minimise downtime.
  • Perform inspection and testing on mechanical and electrical systems, following procedures and statutory requirements.
  • Provide technical expertise and support to internal teams and external contractors, ensuring safe and efficient work.
  • Accurately update company systems with maintenance records, fault reports and compliance documentation.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reliability, efficiency and environmental performance.

Location: Otterbourne, Hampshire - you will also need to be willing to travel across multiple sites and have a current full driving licence.

Contract Type: Permanent

Hours: 38 hours 8:00-16:30 Monday to Wednesday & 15:30 finish on Thursday & Friday

Salary: Base pay ranges £40,860.92 up to £48,509.64 per annum (depending on skills and experience)

About the role

Join our Water Supply Team, to play a vital part in the frontline of our day-to-day maintenance of, and repairs to, Water supply works, reservoirs and booster stations to ensure all environmental, quality and customer service standards are met, whilst meeting H&S legislation and achieving budgetary targets.

What you will be responsible for:

Additional Requirements

Standby cover required on a 1-in-6 Rota basis.

What you’ll bring to the role:
Essential
  • Level 3 NVQ Mechanical and/or Electrical qualification with certificates.
  • Full UK driving licence.
  • Problem-solving skills and ability to work under pressure.
Desirable
  • Experience in water industry.
  • Strong understanding of pumping station operation and water treatment process.
  • Knowledge of health and safety legislation.
