Job summary

NES Group Ltd in Grangemouth is seeking a Process Safety Engineer to lead and implement process safety programs across assets and projects. You will chair PHAs, lead LOPAs, conduct HRA and root‑cause investigations, and drive COMAH compliance through timely reviews, audits and KPIs.

Ideal candidates are chartered chemical engineers with 5+ years in petrochemical/oil & gas environments, with strong communication and analytical skills.

Job description

Process Safety Engineer

Location: Grangemouth

Responsibilities
  • Provide process safety related technical competence and guidance to the client’s assets.
  • Develop and implement management strategies for non‑compliance with legislative practices by identifying gaps and agreeing with asset management on work programmes to address and mitigate such gaps.
  • Lead the planning and implementation of local Process Hazards Analysis programs, chair PHAs and/or identify appropriate resources to chair.
  • Lead or participate in LOPAs (Level of Protection Analysis) reviews in response to asset or project demand.
  • Lead Safety Engineering Reviews, PHSERs and pre‑startup safety reviews in response to asset or project demand.
  • Support the development and maintenance of site‑wide QRAs to form the basis of COMAH submissions.
  • Develop, maintain and conduct trend analysis on leading/lagging process safety KPIs to influence process safety improvement plans.
  • Audit asset compliance with the plant modification system and identify areas for improvement.
  • Coach or mentor less experienced engineers to ensure process safety issues are addressed as part of design and operational processes.
  • Manage the review and update of local area COMAH reports to meet legislative requirements.
  • Provide input to site COMAH establishment reports as required.
  • Ensure, along with other members of the Process Safety Network, that a full range of process safety skills are available to the complex and that gaps, training and resource needs are identified as required.
  • Lead root‑cause investigations for process safety incidents, making considered recommendations to asset management and addressing both immediate and underlying system causes.
  • Regularly review the status of process safety information, identify gaps and develop improvement plans.
  • Develop and maintain the asset register of Safety Critical Tasks (SCTs).
  • Lead the planning and implementation of Human Reliability Analysis (HRA) for high‑priority SCTs.
  • Exhibit excellent technical leadership skills and interpersonal skills, assisting teams in reaching consensus decisions.
  • Influence at all levels of the organization, from senior management to operating/maintenance technicians, explaining engineering decisions and rationale.
  • Have the skills and experience necessary to be part of the Process Safety Network and contribute on behalf of the asset they represent.
  • Participation in the site incident management team may be required.
Qualifications
  • Preferably a chartered chemical engineer with a minimum of five years experience in petrochemical, midstream, oil and gas or refinery operations. Experience should be wide‑ranging and include projects, design and operating environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to create relationships with stakeholders and third‑party specialists.
  • Strong technical skills, specifically in the process safety area.
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret complicated systems and regulations.
  • Risk assessment skills – knowledge of specific tools and the ability to interpret results.
  • Good knowledge of human factors influencing process safety and current industry best practices.
