What We Do

Everyone has an idea of what a water company does. Here in Yorkshire, we make sure that over 5.4 million people living in the region and the millions of people who visit our region each year, can rely on our services, and have clean and safe drinking water on tap and that their wastewater is taken away. But for us, it's so much more than this.

We look after communities, protect the environment, and plan to look after Yorkshire's water, today, tomorrow 24/7, 365 days a year. We provide essential water and wastewater services to every corner of the Yorkshire region, and play a key role in the region's health, wellbeing, and prosperity.

New environmental legislation, unprecedented levels of investment and changing expectations from customers means that this is an exciting time to discover opportunities within the water industry. Water Production are a key part of how we plan to meet the changing expectations of customers and regulators.

Water Production is a close-knit dynamic environment, where water is continuously treated across the 50 Water Treatment Works to produce clean and safe drinking water to our valued customers. Water Treatment Works are large manufacturing facilities both with indoor and outside areas, using different chemicals and processes to change the water from reservoir or river water to drinking water, using lots of mechanical and electrical equipment. This is an operational role rather than a design or supervisory type Process Engineer role.

Where You Fit In

As our Process Engineer, you will:

  • Be based at a Water Treatment Works, taking care of and completing operational and plant maintenance activities to provide wholesome water to our customers. Tasks include, but are not limited to, cleaning and calibrating instrumentation, completing Water Quality laboratory checks, fault finding and diagnosing treatment issues, integrating trend data, cleaning process tanks, completing small-scale pipework repairs, working with electrical and mechanical colleagues to resolve faults, and accepting chemical deliveries—all to ensure compliance with water quality standards, environmental regulations, health and safety, and process safety.
  • Lead chemical and process optimisation of the water treatment processes to achieve production plans and manage costs. You will lead optimisation activities, share best practices, and ensure minimal service outages. Manage asset failure, operational recovery, and support cost monitoring.
  • Review Risk Assessments and Methods Statements, issue control of work documentation, adhere to safe systems of work, identify hazards, and implement mitigation measures. Update reporting systems to ensure HSE compliance across the WTW in line with statutory requirements.
  • Support operational actions on site during incidents or operational events, ensuring escalation and management are appropriate.
  • Embrace modernisation and asset maintenance to reduce failures, supporting the new operational asset management system (ERP).

What Skills & Qualifications You Will Need

  • A hands-on, practical approach with multiskilled capabilities. Previous water treatment experience is advantageous but not essential. Willingness to learn and understand regulatory health, safety, and environmental obligations. Analytical, keen on fault finding, data review, and trend analysis.
  • Attention to detail to ensure 'right first time' performance. Proficiency in IT systems and knowledge of risk policies and procedures. Open to new technologies, innovation, and fast-paced operational environments.
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including colleagues and service partners.
  • Desirable: experience in a commercial/regulatory environment, water or wastewater sectors, or broader utilities, process, or manufacturing industries.
  • Must pass medical criteria for confined spaces, including BMI, vision, blood pressure, hearing, and spirometry tests. Contact us if you wish to discuss these requirements.
  • A full UK driving licence with no more than 6 points. Flexibility to respond to out-of-hours incidents on a rota basis.

We support flexible working patterns and job share options to help balance work and home life.
