The Role of the Process Control Technician is to provide technical expertise and maintain safe and efficient operations on the Liberty Speciality Steels Stocksbridge site.

The Role of the Process Control Technician

  • Quality Assurance, maintenance, and development of a wide range of combustion, process control and inspection equipment and instrumentation, but not exhaustive, water treatment, natural gas steam boilers, Security access systems, Radiation monitoring, a range of CCTV and communication equipment, PC and Server based product tracking and control systems.
  • Planned and reactive maintenance activities, in line with the company's asset management framework (CAMF), Statutory responsibilities, Plant histories,Fault finding techniques,Delay analyses and the use of your own knowledge of process, and plant.
  • The technician is responsible for the health and safety of themselves and others and must always apply risk identification and control techniques such as Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification and utilise the Hazard Reporting system to further improve H&S culture. This includes proof testing. Undertake and assist with the development of SIF procedures.
  • Carry out calibrations and ensure correct documentation. Create reports / feedback on relevant Maintenance Management systems to ensure customer quality assurance. Attend meetings as required to assist in the management and execution of energy saving initiatives, engineering planning, furnace efficiency improvements, furnace upgrades, process safety.
  • Assist project engineers during the installation of capital projects and equipment.
  • To communicate with and attain the support from the central network, process systems and process control teams where required.
  • Support the development of Technicians, Graduates, and Apprentices to satisfy current and long-term Business objectives.
  • The job holder must become familiar with equipment, systems, and technologies through close contact with other departmental engineers and manufacturing personnel, suppliers, manufacturers and the study of technical literature, manuals, and specific training courses. This expertise will,in turn, be applied on a daily basis to ensure that effective maintenance is achieved, and plant performance is maximised.
  • Due to the highly technical aspects of the position, technicians will be required to specialise on certain designated items of plant or equipment but also have a working knowledge of all plant and equipment across the department.

Required of the Process Control Technician

  • Qualified to ONC / HNC in an engineering discipline, preferably with an electrical based apprenticeship.
  • Practitioner knowledge of process control and its application.
  • Working knowledge of electrical safety, health, safety, and environmental legislation including Process Safety
  • Awareness of Process Hazards Analysis Methodologies, Hazard and Operability study (HAZOP)
  • Quality standards, procedures, and auditing Inc. ISO9001, TS 16949, AS9100, IS0 17025, and NADCAP standards
  • Process Systems, networks, and communications (SCADA, LAN)
  • Awareness of quality management systems and external auditing requirements.
  • A sound understanding and experience of the theory and practice of the following areas: -
  • Instrumentation and Control
  • Furnace Combustion and Control Equipment.
  • Energy, fuels, utilities management and combustion of fuels
  • Communications: (hard wired tannoys and Radio Frequency systems), CCTV
  • Weighing systems
  • Plant sensors/detectors, transducers and displays
  • PLC and PC systems
  • Risk Analysis and Assessment Methodologies.

Skills Required

  • Strong Drive, Motivation and Commitment: i.e., the individual is self-starting and self-motivated with a degree and consistency of energy / enthusiasm which is committed in the pursuit of objectives and business goals.
  • The post holder should have good analytical skills and the ability to assimilate, organise and analyse pertinent information for logic-based problem solving.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Able to communicate in clear concise manner, both in writing and orally, communicating honestly, clearly and directly, making effective use of communication technology.
  • Computer literate with practical experience of relevant Maintenance Management Systems.
  • A team worker, with a flexible approach to work.
  • Customer and Quality Awareness: sensitivity to external and internal customer needs and awareness of the benefits of good customer service. Driven by the need to understand and meet the expectations / requirements of customers.
  • Proactively builds strong relationships. Is passionate about and perseveres in the pursuit of challenging goals. Demonstrates energy, drive and enthusiasm when striving to accomplish and improve results.
  • Problem Solving and Decision Making Defines problems, systematically gathers and analyses data, identifies cause and effects and establishes root causes and achievable solutions. Makes good and timely decisions.
