University of Bath invites applications for a Prize Fellow in Mathematical Sciences within CWBE. The role focuses on developing an independent research programme in water-based early-warning systems, securing funding, and building a research group while collaborating across disciplines.
We welcome candidates with expertise in statistical or AI methods relevant to public health and environmental challenges, and with potential for high-impact international collaborations and teaching contributions.
Prize Fellow in Mathematical Sciences and CWBE
Join our thriving Centre of Excellence in Water-Based Systems for Health Protection and Department of Mathematical Sciences as a Prize Fellow.
The Centre of Excellence in Water-Based Early-Warning Systems for Health Protection (CWBE) is a £13m interdisciplinary research centre, established in 2024 with funding from Research England’s Expanding Excellence in England (E3) scheme, together with contributions from the University of Bath and partners.
We are working to transform public and environmental health management, establishing the first Urban Living Lab facility; a state-of-the-art digital water sensing platform, training base and ideas hub. Our ambition is to provide a practical roadmap for a UK early-warning system, co‑produced with regional and national stakeholders to serve as a sentinel and multigenerational testing site for research and innovation. This platform will enable testing of public health and environmental interventions focused on increasing community resilience to disease, pollution and climate change impacts.
We particularly welcome applications from researchers developing innovative statistical or AI methodology relevant to water-based early‑warning systems and the environmental and public health challenges addressed by CWBE.
Relevant areas might include, but are not limited to, spatio‑temporal models, time‑series analysis, anomaly and change‑point detection, Bayesian hierarchical models, statistical machine learning, optimal monitoring and sampling designs, and the integration of mechanistic and data‑driven models. Strong candidates will have a track record of working on high‑impact applications in collaboration with colleagues in other disciplines such as life sciences, environmental sciences, engineering and public health.
The successful candidate will establish an independent research programme within CWBE’s interdisciplinary environment, developing new methodological research while contributing to applications in wastewater‑based epidemiology.
Please provide both research and teaching statements of up to two pages for each in addition to a full CV.
Your research statement needs to outline your plans and intentions for research activity that expands and complements existing capabilities in the centre, grant capture over the coming five years and your planned contributions to further development of the centre. This document will be treated in the strictest confidence and with full respect for ownership. The teaching vision should outline your areas of teaching expertise and a range of potential teaching subjects as well as course development interests. These are mandatory components of the selection process, without which we will be unable to progress your application.
This role is a full‑time fixed term position (36.5 hours per week for 24 months). Subject to satisfactory progress at the end of the fixed term, the position will transfer to a Lectureship in the Department of Mathematical Sciences and CWBE.
For an informal discussion regarding the role please contact Theresa Smith (trs35@bath.ac.uk) or Julian Faraway (jjf23@bath.ac.uk).
Interviews are scheduled to take place on the 8th and 9th December.
