Job summary

Essex County Council is recruiting an Annualised Hours Prison Library Assistant for HMP/YOI Chelmsford. This fixed-term, part-time role supports delivering library services within a secure environment, including educational and rehabilitation programs for prisoners and young offenders.

You will work across library operations, engage with prisoners, and ensure timely book distribution while maintaining strict security and entry procedures for the prison.

Qualifications

• Experience of working with offenders or vulnerable people in a professional capacity.
• Ability to undertake all aspects of the role, including distribution of library books across all wings and floors.

Responsibilities

• Support the Prison Library Manager to deliver a library service in HMP/YOI Chelmsford.
• Deliver Rhymetimes in the prison library for prisoners' children.
• Provide high-quality support and guidance to Prisoner Orderlies on library procedures.
• Handle subject knowledge-based queries and activities.
• Collaborate with colleagues to improve productivity and customer processes.
• Collaborate to understand customer needs and provide a valued service.
• Collate information from various sources to resolve enquiries promptly.
