Job summary

Smurfit Westrock plc in Belfast is seeking a Lithographic printer – Pharmaceutical Packaging to lead the printing team on the shift, coordinating daily production to meet specifications, schedules and cost targets.

The successful candidate will ensure quality, safety, and maintenance, drive continuous improvement and mentor colleagues, while complying with 5S and environmental policies. Previous experience in a busy print environment is preferred and training and development are provided.

Job Purpose:

Working in conjunction with the department Manager, the Shift Manager will coordinate the day-to-day activities of the printing team to ensure that manufacturing operations run according to established production specifications and schedules; volume, cost, and wastage targets; and quality standards.

Key Accountabilities:
Supervisory & administration
  • To comply with current systems of working including established shift patterns
  • To achieve daily/weekly production targets and the upkeep and preparation of reports
  • To achieve the highest possible quality standards working within the guidelines outlined in the established quality systems to achieve customer specification
  • Lead by example and to promote good employee relations and attitude throughout the business
  • To ensure that all working practices are compliant with the requirements of the company’s Quality, H&S and environmental management procedures, systems and/or policies
  • To ensure compliance and adherence to departmental documentation including but not limited to: VWT, SFDC and C Works
  • To monitor time and attendance records for the team.
  • To carry out training, performance reviews, and chair disciplinary meetings when necessary.
  • To control resource expenditure for direct expense and consumables within the approved budget and provide early indications of any potential variances within appropriate timescales
  • To participate in continuous learning activities and development and influence improvement initiatives within production
  • To communicate proficiently and professionally with business stakeholders and customers.
  • To keep Senior Managers up to date with accurate departmental information
  • To cover the Department Managers absence as and when applicable
  • Participate as part of a team to maximise machine efficiency
  • Quality check printed sheets using manual and electronic quality aids

Environmental, Health and Safety

  • It is your responsibility to co-operate with Smurfit Westrock in relation to all health, safety and environmental topics. This includes working to the practices shown during training that will be provided to you and the company's health, safety and environmental policies. You will be expected to work in accordance with local site practices and not to interfere with or misuse anything that's been provided for your health, safety or welfare
Maintenance
  • To lead and oversee maintenance programs for the department in line with established planned maintenance programs ensuring that there is always a proactive approach to keeping the machines operational.
  • To keep work area clean tidy ensuring that the highest standards of housekeeping and hygiene are always maintained.
  • To ensure that there is always adherence to the sites 5S policy at all times.

Knowledge, Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Experience of managing a team of direct reports would be advantageous but not essential
  • Ability to project lead from start to finish, ensuring that targets are met right first time and within budget
  • Experience working in a busy print environment, working to tight deadlines
  • Demonstrable experience of working to high quality standards, with attention to detail
  • IT literate including high-level proficiency in Microsoft office suite particularly MS Word, Excel, Power Point and Teams.
  • We are happy to consider trainee applicants from candidates with relevant printing experience. Training and development will be provided depending on the successful candidate's previous skills and experience.
  • Communication: ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers, verbally, in writing and through presentations.
  • Determination: ability to overcome obstacles.
  • Influence/persuasiveness: ability to influence and inspire others.
  • Be self‑motivated.
  • Be standards‑driven with a keen eye for detail.

Flexible and adaptable to change and prepared to take on additional responsibilities with other duties as required to meet business needs. Successfully adapts to changing demands and conditions. Be able to be self‑motivated, standards driven, with a keen eye for detail whilst being team focused and harnessing collaboration and co‑operation of others.
