Printweek is seeking an experienced Production Controller & Estimator to join our established print business. You will turn orders into practical production plans, manage routing, capacity, materials and delivery milestones to keep jobs moving.
You’ll review estimates, costs and margins, control outwork and job costing, and work with Sales, Studio, Production and Finance to protect profitability and accuracy across pre-press to despatch.
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced Production Controller & Estimator to join an established print business, taking responsibility for ensuring print work flows efficiently, profitably and on time from order through to production, despatch and job completion.
This is a varied role combining production planning, commercial control, estimating, job costing, purchasing and workflow management, making it ideal for someone with a strong understanding of the print production process who enjoys being at the centre of getting jobs delivered.
You’ll take confirmed orders and turn them into practical production plans, ensuring the correct production route, capacity, materials, outsourced processes and delivery milestones are in place. You’ll maintain a realistic schedule across pre-press, print, finishing and despatch, monitor live jobs and identify potential delays or capacity issues early, coordinating solutions to keep work moving while protecting quality, customer commitments and margin.
The role also has a strong commercial element. You’ll review estimates, specifications, selling prices and expected margins before jobs are released, challenging anything that doesn’t look right and ensuring costs, materials, outwork and job information are accurately controlled.
You’ll use the system extensively for estimating and estimate review, job creation, production routing, purchasing, scheduling, job costing, WIP and management reporting. Maintaining accurate and up-to-date job information will be a key part of ensuring the wider business has reliable information to work from.
You’ll also be involved in purchasing paper, board and consumables, managing external suppliers and trade partners, obtaining competitive quotations and resolving any discrepancies in costs or deliveries. Strong communication will be important, as you’ll work closely with Sales, Client Services, Estimating, Studio/Pre-press, Production, Warehouse, Despatch and Finance, as well as external suppliers.
The successful candidate will have practical experience within a commercial print, packaging or direct mail environment, together with a solid understanding of estimating, production planning, materials, outwork, job costing and margin control. You’ll be commercially aware, highly organised and confident enough to challenge information when necessary, while always looking to find a workable solution.
Excellent attention to detail is essential, but so is the ability to see the bigger picture and prioritise delivery. You’ll need to be a calm and decisive problem solver who can manage competing demands, communicate clearly and maintain control when things get busy.
The role would suit someone who enjoys being the person who keeps production moving, spots potential problems before they become issues and makes sure jobs are delivered both efficiently and profitably.
If you have strong print knowledge and enjoy the combination of production control and commercial responsibility, this could be an excellent next step.
