Join Kirklees Council as a Principal Transport Planner – Pipeline Lead!

Are you an experienced Transport Planning professional looking for your next challenge? Kirklees Council is seeking a talented and forward-thinking Principal Transport Planner to lead the development and delivery of our transport projects. Join us in driving the future of transport in the North of England and help us shape sustainable, connected communities.

Kirklees – The Heart of the North’s Transport Transformation

Nestled in the heart of the North, Kirklees is at the forefront of an exciting, once-in-a-generation transport revolution. With significant investments in public transport and active travel infrastructure, we are on a mission to create safer, healthier, and more accessible travel options for everyone.

As we collaborate with West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA), Kirklees is growing its bus networks and working to integrate bus, rail, and the upcoming West Yorkshire Mass Transit system. Future plans include exploring a Mass Transit route connecting Leeds, White Rose, and areas of Kirklees like Dewsbury, creating seamless travel options for all. Through funding from initiatives such as the Active Travel Fund, Transforming Cities Fund, and the City Regional Sustainable Transport Settlement, we are expanding active travel networks and improving urban and rural areas alike.

Excitingly, the multi-billion-pound Transpennine Route Upgrade project is underway, bringing faster, more reliable trains across the region, with significant improvements to 8 stations within Kirklees, including Huddersfield and Dewsbury. This project is transforming connectivity across the Pennines, connecting communities to Leeds, Manchester, York, Liverpool, and beyond.

Your Role – Principal Transport Planner – Pipeline Lead

  • Leading feasibility studies and preparing high-quality business cases to secure external funding.
  • Managing large-scale, high-profile transport projects, with a focus on Active Travel and Public Transport initiatives.
  • Working alongside the Transport Strategy Team to influence transport policy and contribute to the development of the West Yorkshire Local Transport Plan 4 and the Kirklees Transport Strategy.

You will bring:

  • A proven track record in Transport Planning, Highways Engineering, or a closely related field, with extensive experience in delivering transport projects.
  • Strong expertise in transport business case development and project management.
  • A passion for creating sustainable, accessible, and innovative transport solutions.
