Job summary

Fawkes & Reece London is seeking a seasoned Temporary Works Engineer to lead design across major infrastructure and civil projects. You will develop and approve complex temporary works packages, ensuring compliance with BS standards and project requirements.

The role requires a strong technical background in temporary works, experience with AutoCAD/Revit/Tekla/STAAD Pro, and the ability to guide junior engineers while coordinating with multidisciplinary teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering (or related discipline).
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or actively pursuing chartership.
  • Significant experience in structural engineering and temporary works design in civil/construction.
  • Strong knowledge of temporary works procedures, governance, and design per BS/industry guidance.
  • Experience designing temporary works solutions: excavations, retaining systems, foundations, working platforms, formwork, falsework, lifting arrangements.
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Tekla Tedds, STAAD Pro or equivalent analysis tools.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and engineering of temporary and permanent works across infrastructure and civil projects.
  • Develop, review, and approve calculations, drawings, specs, and design deliverables per standards.
  • Provide technical leadership on temporary works and construction sequencing.
  • Collaborate with site teams, project managers, permanent works designers, and subcontractors to meet safety and program requirements.
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and designers.
  • Conduct site visits to validate design assumptions and resolve issues.
  • Participate in risk assessments, constructability reviews, and design reviews.
  • Ensure temporary works designs integrate into delivery plans and comply with CDM regs and company procedures.
  • Support continuous improvement to enhance buildability and safety.

Job description

Duties
  • Lead the design and engineering phases of temporary and permanent works packages across a range of infrastructure and civil engineering projects.
  • Develop, review, and approve engineering calculations, drawings, specifications, and design deliverables in accordance with relevant standards, codes, and project requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership on temporary works solutions, including support systems, excavation works, formwork, falsework, lifting operations, working platforms, and construction sequencing.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including site teams, project managers, permanent works designers, and specialist subcontractors, to ensure designs meet operational, programme, and safety requirements.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to junior engineers and designers.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections to validate design assumptions, assess compliance, and resolve technical issues during construction.
  • Participate in temporary works coordination meetings, risk assessments, constructability reviews, and design reviews.
  • Ensure temporary works designs are fully integrated into project delivery plans and comply with CDM regulations, industry standards, and company procedures.
  • Support innovation and continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance design efficiency, buildability, and safety performance.
  • Keep up to date with the latest developments in temporary works engineering, construction methodologies, and industry best practice.
Person Specification
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a related discipline. A Master's degree is desirable.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, or actively working towards chartership.
  • Significant experience in structural engineering and temporary works design within the civil engineering or construction industry.
  • Strong understanding of temporary works procedures, governance, and design requirements in accordance with relevant British Standards and industry guidance.
