Job description

We are working closely alongside a Local Authority in Woolwich to assist with the appointment of a Principal Sustainability Officer, on a 6-month contract, highly likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration.

Rate of Pay:£25.39-£32.00/Hour

Summary:

The Royal Borough of Greenwich is seeking a passionate and experienced Principal Sustainability Officer to drive forward our Carbon Neutral Plan (CNP). With our strategy now in the delivery phase, this is a dynamic and influential role focused on helping the borough achieve carbon neutrality by 2030. Youll lead the development of sustainability policies and projects, provide expert guidance across council services, secure funding, manage key contracts, and shape engagement through our Climate Network. Youll also help embed environmental thinking and action across the Council, making this a transformative opportunity to create meaningful change at the local level.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee the delivery and strategic development of the Carbon Neutral Plan.
  
• Lead the preparation and reporting of Scope 1, 2, and 3 borough-wide emissions in compliance with governance processes.
• Support council services with expert sustainability advice and integrate sustainability practices across departments.
  
• Lead and manage a team of up to 3 officers; support wider staff and external partners as needed.
• Secure external funding and develop strong business cases for sustainability investment.

Requirements:

• Proven experience in formulating and delivering sustainability policies and carbon management programs.
• Demonstrable experience preparing emissions reporting (Scopes 13) in line with governance requirements.
• Strong background in managing sustainability-related contracts and procurement processes.
  
• Experience working in or with a Local Authority or public sector organization.
• Track record of securing and managing funding for environmental initiatives.
• Experience leading or contributing to performance monitoring frameworks for sustainability strategies.
