The Local Authority is seeking a Principal Building Control Officer to lead on complex Building Control applications, provide technical leadership, and supervise a dedicated team.

This hands-on role blends office-based work with site inspections, ensuring compliance with Building Regulations and public safety, with a minimum two days on-site weekly.

Chartered status or active progression, strong leadership and communication skills are essential to drive service improvements.

Qualifications

• Professional qualifications from a recognised chartered institute in Building Control.
• Minimum Class 2F Registration.
• Chartered status with CIOB, RICS, or CABE.
• Strong leadership and communication skills, with technical expertise.

Responsabilités

• Conduct site inspections and plan checking (min 2 days on-site per week).
• Assess Building Control applications in line with accreditation.
• Respond to dangerous structures and ensure public safety.
• Enforce Building Regulations and the Building Act as required.
• Supervise senior and junior surveyors and admin staff.
• Deputise for the Building Control Manager when needed.
• Support implementation of BSR operational standards.
• Contribute to service improvements and procedural changes.

Location: Essex

The Opportunity

Working closely with the Building Control Manager, you will lead on a variety of complex applications and provide technical expertise while supporting and supervising a dedicated team. This is a dynamic, hands-on role combining office-based work, site inspections, and leadership responsibilities.

Key Responsibilities

• Conduct site inspections and plan checking (minimum 2 days on-site per week)
• Assess a wide range of Building Control applications aligned with your accreditation
• Respond to dangerous structures and ensure public safety
• Enforce Building Regulations and the Building Act where necessary
• Supervise and support senior and junior surveyors, as well as administrative staff
• Deputise for the Building Control Manager when required
• Support the implementation of BSR operational standards
• Contribute to service improvements and procedural changes

Working Pattern

• Minimum 1 day per week office-based
• 2 days per week conducting site inspections across the district
• Remaining time flexible depending on workload
