With numerous existing projects and new wins anticipated in 2024, we are seeking a Principal Rail Engineer to join our expanding team at one of our national offices.

Based in London, Birmingham, or Redhill, our diverse team is involved in some of the UK’s most prestigious and innovative projects worldwide.

Job Description

We are looking for a motivated professional with consultancy experience to join our established team working on infrastructure and redevelopment projects. Our recent successes have led to team growth and excellent opportunities for the right candidate.

The successful candidate will join a highly rated team known for quality, technical expertise, and delivering commercially focused solutions to public and private sector clients.

Key Responsibilities

1. Leading Waterman Rail projects, including civils and structures design.
2. Promoting safety culture and environmental commitment across delivery teams.
3. Managing high-value, multi-disciplinary infrastructure bids and projects.
4. Engaging with clients to support project delivery.
5. Developing and maintaining effective teams to deliver projects on time and within budget.
6. Understanding and meeting client business needs to ensure confidence in our delivery.
7. Ensuring work is completed cost-effectively and to specifications.
8. Working under pressure to produce high-quality reports and bids within deadlines.
9. Contributing to bid proposals for target opportunities.
10. Managing and coordinating rail bid delivery with technical discipline leads.
11. Representing Waterman in client interactions for projects under responsibility.
12. Utilizing Waterman project management systems and tools.
13. Developing project plans and execution strategies.
14. Building team capability and stakeholder confidence.
15. Managing change control processes and producing progress reports.
16. Delivering revenues from specific clients through flawless project execution.
17. Having a solid understanding of NR, TfL project delivery processes.
18. Completing projects without write-downs or erosions.
19. Identifying project risks and opportunities and working with project managers to mitigate risks.
20. Managing sub-contracts to deliver key works.
21. Innovating and embracing new working methods and digital tools.
22. Experience with Design & Build projects, especially in contractor or design-based organizations, demonstrating control over activities.
23. Knowledge of various contracting types, especially target cost, and dispute resolution skills.
24. Familiarity with Network Rail, TfL, and major contractor delivery processes through project experience.

Qualifications and Experience

Ideally, candidates will have:

• Chartered status (C.Eng/MIStructE).
• A full UK driving license.
• Experience with Network Rail, TfL, and other key clients' delivery processes.
• Significant UK Rail sector experience in a relevant engineering discipline.
• Experience in CEM/CRE or project management roles on multidisciplinary rail projects.
• Familiarity with public sector frameworks.
