Job summary

Principal Process Engineer - Water & Wastewater

Location: Manchester

Salary: £70,000 - £80,000 DOE

Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time

The Opportunity

We are recruiting an experienced Principal Process Engineer to take a leading role in the design and delivery of water and wastewater treatment projects.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Chartered Process Engineer with extensive water industry experience who is ready to take technical ownership of projects while supporting and developing other engineers.

You will play a key role in developing, reviewing and approving process designs, providing technical leadership to multidisciplinary teams and ensuring solutions are practical, efficient and compliant with client, regulatory and water company requirements.

The Role

As Principal Process Engineer, you will:

• Lead the development of practical and efficient process design solutions for water and wastewater projects.
• Review and approve technical reports, specifications, design deliverables and Design Risk Assessments (DRAs).
• Check and approve mass balances, process sizing, hydraulic calculations and Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs).
• Review control philosophies and commissioning strategies.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance throughout the project lifecycle.
• Lead and participate in HAZOP, ALM, KM and other technical review meetings.
• Mentor and support engineers and graduates within the process engineering team.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant technical standards, professional guidance and water company requirements.
• Ensure design changes are correctly implemented, controlled and recorded.
• Support tender submissions and technical proposals.
• Estimate design hours and contribute to project planning and resource requirements.
• Review and communicate changes to technical standards and procedures.
• Support the continuous improvement of process engineering standards and best practice.

About You

We are looking for an established Process Engineer with substantial experience within the regulated UK water sector.

Essential Experience

• 10+ years' process design experience within the regulated water industry.
• Extensive knowledge of wastewater treatment processes and treatment plant design.
• Proven experience delivering process designs for water and/or wastewater projects.
• Degree, HND or significant relevant engineering experience gained through technician-level progression.
• Strong IT and digital capability.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

Desirable Experience

• Experience across both clean water and wastewater projects.
• Experience participating in or leading HAZOP studies, ideally as HAZOP Chair.
• Experience supporting tenders and technical proposals.
• Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
