Job summary

Salford Council is recruiting a Principal Planning Officer to join the Development Management team on a permanent contract in Greater Manchester. The role focuses on large-scale major applications, pre-application advice, and providing robust, timely reports and recommendations.

You will present evidence at appeals, supervise junior colleagues, and contribute to service improvements within a hybrid working setup based in Swinton. A planning degree and RTPI eligibility are expected.

Qualifications

• Extensive knowledge of planning policy and development management.
• Ability to communicate effectively at all levels of stakeholders.
• Experience supervising junior colleagues and guiding project work.

Responsibilities

• Manage a caseload of complex major applications and provide timely reports.
• Deliver pre-application advice to applicants, architects and agents.
• Prepare and present written and verbal evidence for appeals; act as expert witness if required.
• Supervise and coach junior colleagues to share knowledge and improve performance.
