Principal Pharmacist – Hepatology

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced, influential pharmacist with advanced, expert clinical knowledge and skills to lead the hepatology pharmacy team at St George's Hospital. The Hepatology team have recently achieved Improving Quality in Liver Service (IQILS) level 2. The team are dedicated to improving liver health across Southwest London both in secondary and primary and community services. The pharmacy team have received a special commendation for their contribution to the service. SGH provides tertiary Hepatology services to SW London and Surrey providing level 2 and 3 care. They are the regional hub for PBC second line treatment with a dedicated pharmacist led clinic for assessment, treatment and monitoring.

The post offers a pivotal role to act as the principal pharmacist, working closely with multidisciplinary and senior management teams to ensure the cost effective and safe running of the service. The post holder will be an experienced pharmacist with extensive hepatology, leadership and management experience. You will manage, supervise and support pharmacy and hepatology staff and lead on the provision and development of the clinical pharmacy services. Main duties of the job

To work as an advanced expert pharmacist within hepatology including independent prescribing, outpatient clinics, MDT meetings and ward rounds

To lead on the provision and development of the clinical pharmacy services across the region including clinical risk and governance, finance, operations and research.

To act as a role model providing education, training, and mentoring to staff within pharmacy and the specialty.

To manage and develop pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, trainee pharmacists and students.

To attend and participate in care group, divisional and other trust meetings, working collaboratively with key stakeholders internal and external to the Trust to develop the service.

To progress service improvement initiatives through multi-disciplinary working to ensure safe and timely provision of medicines.

To lead on and promote research and audit within the speciality.

To participate in the senior management team within pharmacy.

The successful applicant will be able to manage multiple priorities and deliver against deadlines. You will have excellent communication skills and be an enthusiastic educator. You should possess a postgraduate diploma in clinical pharmacy or equivalent and have the relevant hospital pharmacy experience. Experience of working and influencing in a multi-disciplinary team and an independent prescribing qualification are essential.

Qualifications
  • BPharm / MPharm / BSc (Pharmacy) or equivalent
  • Professional registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy or General Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent)
  • Registered Independent Prescriber
  • Mandatory CPD to maintain fitness to practice
  • Masters in advanced pharmacy Practice or relevant clinical area
  • Membership of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS)
  • Accredited educational and practice supervisor
  • Formal leadership and management training
Experience
  • high level of clinical competency,
  • Experience of operational and strategic direction of the clinical service
  • Experience of directorate work including: Drug expenditure reporting, DTC applications and formulary management, Service development, Quality improvement, Procedure, policy and guideline writing and implementation
  • Demonstrable experience in working across the interface including ICBs, GPs and community pharmacy
  • Experience in delivering training and education at undergraduate and postgraduate level
  • Experience of leading, implementing into practice and/or publishing research
  • Experience of being a designated prescribing practitioner and/or clinical supervisor
  • Experience of using an electronic patient and medicines administration system

Knowledge
  • Advanced clinical and professional knowledge of hepatology and related specialties
  • Core knowledge of wider therapeutics and pharmacology with a record of successful application
  • Knowledge of NHS issues, priorities, policy, procedures and guidelines and ability to implement these locally
  • Demonstrates awareness of a commitment to Clinical Governance
  • Demonstrates an awareness of interface issues
  • Demonstrates ability to analyse and interpret highly complex clinical information
  • Demonstrates experience in managing medicines use expenditure/budgets
  • Familiarity with CMM and Cerner computer systems
