Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Water)

We are currently recruiting multiple Principal Mechanical Design Engineers (Water) for major frameworks across the UK.

RPS, in partnership with Tetra Tech, has secured a £100 million framework from United Utilities to improve river health in Northwest England. With over 20 years of collaboration with United Utilities, we are at an exciting phase of industry innovation and environmental impact.

This 10-year framework aims to optimize programs, develop solutions, and select the best options based on value, low carbon footprint, and cost, with a mission to deliver resilient and eco-friendly water services.

About The Team:

Our Water Consulting team consists of Engineers, Modellers, and Data Analysts providing Asset Management and Operational Strategy to UK water industry clients, supporting business planning and delivery. We work on prestigious AMP8 programs, ensuring long-term career growth and impact.

About You:

You should have experience in producing technical specifications, designing pumping and aeration systems, and working with collaborative planning reviews. Familiarity with general arrangement drawings, 3D models, and P&ID diagrams is essential. Strong communication skills and experience in water treatment processes are required.

You will contribute to projects from feasibility to detailed design, liaise with stakeholders, and support team development. Knowledge of AutoCAD or similar software is advantageous.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Involvement throughout project lifecycle, including site surveys and investigations.
  • Working on diverse projects across UK frameworks.
  • Collaborating with project teams, clients, and stakeholders.
  • Mentoring junior staff and reviewing technical designs.
  • Understanding and developing technical drawings and specifications.
Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience in water industry projects preferred.
  • Design of pumping systems, P&ID creation, and specifications.
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations and safety design.
  • Ability to manage work within time, cost, and quality constraints.
Qualifications:
  • IMechE accredited degree; postgraduate preferred.
  • Chartered or working towards chartership.
  • Membership with professional bodies like IET, InstMC, or CIWEM.
