Principal Mechanical Design Engineer (Water)

We are recruiting multiple Principal Mechanical Design Engineers (Water) for major frameworks across the UK, including a £100 million framework supporting river health improvements for United Utilities.

RPS has over 20 years of partnership with United Utilities, working on innovative projects. This role offers the opportunity to work on long-term programs supporting the water industry’s evolution towards AMP8, focusing on program optimization, sustainable solutions, and community impact.

About The Team:

RPS Water Consulting comprises Engineers, Modellers, and Data Analysts providing Asset Management and Operational Strategy services to the water sector. The team is involved in diverse, challenging projects, fostering innovation and teamwork.

About You:

You should have experience in producing technical specifications, designing pumping and aeration systems, and collaborating on design solutions. Strong communication skills and familiarity with water treatment processes are essential.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Participate in project life cycles from feasibility to construction support.
  • Engage with various water companies across the UK on long-term frameworks.
  • Collaborate with project teams and stakeholders to ensure project success.
  • Mentor junior staff and review technical designs and reports.
  • Understand technical drawings and undertake asset surveys.
  • Prepare mechanical design deliverables and support safety and quality procedures.

Skills, Knowledge, and Experience:

  • Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, with water industry experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in designing pumping systems, creating P&ID diagrams, and producing specifications.
  • Knowledge of CDM regulations and contract procurement methods.
  • Ability to manage work within time, cost, and quality constraints.
  • Willingness to travel to operational sites as needed.

Qualifications:

  • An IMechE-accredited degree, with postgraduate qualifications advantageous.
  • Chartered status or working towards it; membership with professional institutions like IET, InstMC, or CIWEM is desirable.
