Job summary

National Highways is seeking a Principal Engineering Geologist or Geotechnical Engineer to join the South West Operations Geotechnical team. You’ll lead a skilled group, manage geotechnical risks, and develop innovative early solutions for earthworks, rock slopes, drainage and highway assets.

This hybrid role can be based in Bristol or Exeter. A full driving licence with no more than 3 points is required; you will drive as part of the role, and you’ll influence asset management and drive

Qualifications

• Degree and/or Masters in geology or geotechnical engineering.
• Chartered or Incorporated Membership with Geological Society/ICE, or equivalent.
• Extensive experience in ground engineering and infrastructure works.
• Knowledge of geotechnical standards, asset policies and risk management.
• Experience in asset management and budgeting support.

Responsibilities

• Provide specialist technical expertise to identify risks and shape early solutions for renewals and improvement schemes, considering new techniques, materials, buildability and costs.
• Develop asset-specific management plans that support decisions aligned with policy, add value and deliver business goals.
• Identify, prioritise, and manage geotechnical asset needs in line with governance requirements and objectives.
• Commission and oversee survey works; review briefs, reports, drawings and supporting information.
• Champion high-quality asset data, monitor performance, drive data management innovation and guide regional colleagues.
