You will be part of a team creating innovative plug and play designs for Mechanical engineering, design & specifications from the concept and optioneering stage through to the outline and detailed design stage co-ordinating multi-discipline design input to support where necessary.

Within this role you will:
Lead on all technical aspects of opportunity assessment, feasibility, concept development and design for a variety of new infrastructure product and delivery process development projects.
You will drive innovation into every programme of work, looking for cost efficient solutions to a range of problems considering the whole life cost, safety and environmental impact of all proposed solutions.
The Principal Design Engineer shall lead on the Quality Assurance process for checking, reviewing, and approving the team’s in-house design deliverables.
The Principal Design Engineer will work with a range of key internal and external stakeholders to ensure the successful delivery of solutions that meet the needs of the Customer, Key Stakeholders, and the regulatory requirements of OFWAT and the Environment Agency.
It is expected that the role holder will be comfortable developing innovative Mechanical engineering designs from first principles and be comfortable challenging established norms whilst robustly proving their solutions are feasible and safe.
The Principal Design Engineer will be expected to carry out all the duties of a principal designer for prototype programmes within the mechanical engineering space. E.g. water tank prototype.
You will play a key role in developing the technical capability of team members through coaching, mentoring and supporting the Design Managers and Business Leads to identify development opportunities for individual designers.
Create functional design specifications including consideration of: mechanical engineering, CDM regulations, health & safety / buildability / commissioning / operations and maintenance / HAZOPS / appropriate legislation & regulations.
You’ll be ensuring that appropriate mechanical advice is provided to the project team so that the standard solution has an effective handshake between Severn Trent Product Team and Site Design Teams to enable proper installation of products on site!
