Job summary

GE Vernova in the United Kingdom is seeking an experienced Principal Engineer to lead or support high-impact valve design projects. You will combine technical depth with business acumen and act as a technical authority during design reviews and testing.

The role requires a degree in Electrical Engineering or related field, familiarity with LCC and VSC converters, and proficiency with CREO CAD. You will mentor colleagues and help ensure safety and compliance with IEC/IEEE/CIGRÉ standards.

Qualifications

  • Educated to degree level in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science.
  • Preferably also with higher education and a focus on Power Electronics, HV Engineering or Power Systems.
  • Deep understanding of Line Commutated Converters (LCC) and Voltage Source Converters (VSC).
  • Awareness of converter topologies, switching schemes, and control strategies

Responsibilities

  • Work with various teams to ensure robust, reliable valve design.
  • Support the Valve Engineering team to achieve this.
  • Ensure highest safety during testing or installation activities and document accordingly.
  • Take an approver role for design reviews, DFMEA, and act as technical authority for critical decisions.
  • Write and review technical documentation, specifications and reports.
  • Communicate complex technical information to non-technical stakeholders, leadership and customers.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and develop team competency.

Job Description Summary

Principal Engineers combine a high level of technical expertise with sound business acumen and a good understanding of engineering processes. They are part of a formal career path for technical personnel wanting to continue to develop and grow their technical competencies while having increasingly more impact on the business. As recognized experts in specialized fields, they normally lead or support projects and initiatives with broad scope and high impact to the business. They are responsible for major and complex assignments with long-term business implications. This role contributes to the overall strategy and manages complex issues within functional area of expertise.

Roles and Responsibilities
  • Work with various teams in the business to ensure we have the most robust, reliable, efficient, safe and cost-effective Valve design available to the market.
  • Support the Valve Engineering team to achieve this.
  • Ensure the highest levels of safety can be achieved during any testing or installation works and the application of this is within our documentation.
  • Take an approver role for design reviews, risk assessments, Design Failure Mode Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and act as a technical authority for critical decisions.
  • Write and review technical documentation, specifications and reports.
  • Communicate complex technical information clearly to non-technical stakeholders, leadership and customers.
  • Support the testing process in reviewing Inspection & Test Plans (ITP), test circuit design and set up and physical presence during testing.
  • Reflect the relevant international standards within our documentation ensuring at all times GE remains compliant to the requirements.
  • Be pro-active in industry forums to develop the standards of the future.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Proactively develop the competency of the team
Required Qualifications
  • Educated to degree level in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Computer Science.
  • Preferably also with higher education and a focus on Power Electronics, HV Engineering or Power Systems.
  • Deep understanding of Line Commutated Converters (LCC) and Voltage Source Converters (VSC).
  • Awareness of converter topologies, switching schemes, and control strategies
Required Characteristics
  • Able to interface effectively with most levels of the organization
  • Conceptual or theoretical activities related to the principles of engineering, physics, and materials science for the design, analysis, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. Includes the analysis of static (structural) and dynamic behaviour of mechanical systems
  • Competent in CREO / CAD software or similar.
  • Able to read and interpret technical drawings and documentation.
  • Knowledge of relevant IEC, IEEE, or CIGRÉ standards for HVDC systems
  • Knowledge of document control methodologies and systems.
  • EHS compliance ability - good strong knowledge of safety and the environment.
