Job summary

Severn Trent Water is seeking a Principal Engineer (Electrical) to lead technical feasibility and design for water treatment projects. You will drive electrical designs across HV, LV and control systems through full lifecycle, from conception to commissioning, ensuring safety, efficiency and alignment with customer needs.

Based in Finham (Coventry) with options across Derby and Shropshire, the role offers a chance to mentor teams, shape standardised designs, and contribute to sustainability

Qualifications

  • Degree in engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience applying CDM design regulations is advantageous.
  • Proven coaching or mentoring capability within a design team.
  • Valid UK driving licence required.

Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical feasibility and design for water treatment projects (HV, LV, controls).
  • Ensure designs are safe, efficient and meets customer needs.
  • Create and approve design specifications and milestones.
  • Manage third-party designs and regulate compliance with standards.
  • Coach engineers to deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Promote health and safety throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Develop standardised designs and contribute to project risk registers.

Everything you need to know

We have an exciting opportunity for Principal Engineer (Electrical) based in Finham (Coventry), Raynesway (Derby) or Shelton (Shropshire). In this role you’ll be our lead on all technical aspects of feasibility and design for our water treatment projects. Help us to deliver the best solutions for getting water into supply by driving innovative, best in class solutions with a focus on sustainability and quality.

Each day will be different as you create electrical designs & specifications, including HV, LV and control systems across the full project lifecycle. From project conception through to commissioning, you will be ensuring electrical designs are safe, efficient, operable and aligned with our customers need.

Key responsibilities

Creation of designs (optional engineering, outline design, detailed design) and specifications for subsequent delivery.

Assurance and control of third-party designs to meet the requirementsof our customers and regulators.

Coach and support the programme team so that the best solution is delivered (and commissioned) to the agreed, contracted design specification.

Develop and own design assessment and design completion milestones within the Project Team.

Proactively drive the project risk management and ensure risk registers are maintained throughout the entire design process.

Provide expert support to the wider design team by coaching and mentoring other engineers to ensure they can deliver to the highest future standards.

Promote a health and safety focus into the lifecycle of the design.

Use your engineering excellence to develop our standardised designs.

What you’ll bring
  • You’ll be degree qualified (desirable) and showing your professional commitment as a member of one of the relevant engineering institutions. We encourage applications from those actively working towards incorporated or chartered status, a journey which we are keen to support you on.
  • Extensive experience of implementing CDM regulations in design process and experience associated with the role of Principal Designer are an advantage.
  • Evidence of coaching skills and building capability within a design team would be beneficial. A full UK driving licence will be required.
