Job summary

National Grid plc is recruiting a Principal Engineer for Viking Link, based on site at Bicker Fen. You will lead maintenance, outages, and major projects, acting as SAP and Project Leader to ensure safe, reliable operation of HV/LV assets.

You will mentor engineers and contractors, drive improvements, and coordinate with stakeholders to uphold safety standards and asset performance. A full UK driving licence is required.

Qualifications

  • Current Senior Authorised Person (SAP) authorisation.
  • Project Leader experience within a high-voltage operational environment.
  • Strong knowledge of HV and LV systems, including electrical and mechanical disciplines.
  • Experience commissioning and decommissioning plant and equipment.
  • Proven leadership experience managing engineers, technicians and contractors.
  • A minimum HNC qualification in an engineering discipline or equivalent.
  • IOSH, NEBOSH or equivalent health and safety qualification.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • The ability to make sound decisions in complex operational environments.
  • A full UK driving licence.

  • Manage the delivery of key engineering projects and asset improvement initiatives.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching and mentoring to Engineers, Technicians and Apprentices.
  • Supervise contractors and internal teams, driving excellent safety, environmental and operational performance.
  • Lead outage planning and maintenance delivery to maximise asset availability.
  • Support incident investigations and continuous improvement activities.
  • Represent Viking Link at technical and operational meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Champion a positive safety culture and ensure compliance with operational procedures and standards.

We're looking for an experienced Principal Engineer to join our Operations & Maintenance team at Viking Link. This is a unique opportunity to take a leading role in the safe and efficient operation of one of the UK's most strategically important energy assets.

As a Senior Authorised Person and technical leader, you'll be at the forefront of maintaining and improving the performance of our converter station, cable systems, substation assets and operational technology. You'll lead critical projects, mentor engineering colleagues and help shape the future of interconnector operations.

Please note: The role is based on site at Vikinglink in Bicker Fen. There is a requirement to live within one hour of the site.

What You'll do

As Principal Engineer, you'll:

What you'll need

  • Experience within converter stations, transmission, utilities or major infrastructure environments.
  • Institute of Asset Management (IAM) certification.
  • Membership of the IET or another relevant professional body.
  • Knowledge of operational technology, protection and control systems, monitoring systems, HVAC or station power systems.
