Job description

Stantec is working on many of the world’s largest, complex and most exciting hydropower projects. Due to our ongoing success, we are rapidly growing and seek a Principal Electrical Engineer to join our dynamic team, working on the design and development of cutting-edge hydropower and pumped storage hydro solutions. This role can be based anywhere in the UK.

It is a great opportunity to join a growing multi-disciplinary team involved in projects as varied and different as Coire Glas in Scotland, Koysha in Ethiopia, and Dinorwig in Wales, as well as supporting our growing transmission and distribution business.

We have developed a strong reputation within the sector as a leading, progressive, and forward-thinking consultancy, focused on delivering high-quality outputs to ensure the client achieves their outcomes and business benefits. Read more about our work at Stantec Hydropower & Dams.

You will play a key role in all aspects of hydropower projects, from feasibility studies and concept design to construction and commissioning. You will be responsible for leading the electrical engineering design of hydropower projects, including generators, control and instrumentation systems, protection, substations, and transmission lines. You will perform design, model, and analyze electrical and electronic systems to ensure project feasibility and compliance with industry standards.

As a Principal, you will take line management responsibility for some members of the team, support business growth and strategy development, and take ownership of project deliverables.

We work closely with the growing transmission and distribution business, and there will also be opportunities to engage in the design and delivery of significant grid upgrade projects, including new transmission lines and substations.

You will provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and collaborate with civil, mechanical, and other engineering disciplines to ensure a fully integrated project design.

This is an exciting opportunity for an engineer who is passionate about sustainable energy and eager to make a significant impact in the industry.

About You

You will be a Chartered or Incorporated Engineer status with the IET. Experience with large rotating machines (either generators or motors) is essential. Specific experience of hydro and/or pumped storage hydro systems is strongly desirable but is not essential. Electrical experience in other sectors, particularly elsewhere within the Energy and Water sectors, is advantageous.

You will be experienced in producing and interpreting design drawings and documents including (to various levels of detail depending upon the project) single line diagrams, key line diagrams, block cable diagrams, calculations (e.g., for equipment sizing and fault ratings), load schedules, specifications, and reports, and be familiar with collaborative reviews and designs of solutions.

You will have strong communication skills to give technical presentations to clients and other design engineers, as well as inputting into collaborative design discussions including technical workshops.

Most importantly, you will embody and support our values of client focus, designing with community in mind, collaboration, and service excellence.

Why Join us?

  • Flexible working arrangements.
  • Great Projects in all of our sectors across the UK&I.
  • Industry-leading training and development as well as paid for professional subscriptions.
