Summary

Freedom Electrical Design seeks a professional Principal Design Engineer (Overhead Line) to join our expanding team. You will work on complex engineering projects supporting the UK’s Net Zero targets, covering the entire energy system from generation to end consumers.

This role offers a pathway to become Head of OHL Design within 1-2 years as the company grows. The position starts at Principal OHL Engineer, aligned with our organizational grading.

You may be based in Leeds, Stowmarket, or London, with options for remote work. Travel will be required for client meetings, team collaborations, or site visits.

Key Responsibilities

1. Build and lead the OHL design team, attracting talent, clients, and projects, in collaboration with senior management and Business Development teams.
2. Oversee all aspects of OHL design including conductor sizing, insulation, lightning protection, line routing, PLS-CAD modeling, clearance checks, and structure design using PLS-TOWER or PLS-POLE.
3. Produce technical documents such as reports, specifications, drawings, and calculations, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
4. Prepare proposals for OHL projects, defining scope, resources, costs, schedules, and deliverables.
5. Communicate company goals to the design team and provide technical leadership to internal and external stakeholders.
6. Coordinate project teams across multiple projects, overseeing design through all phases from concept to detailed design.
7. Review final documentation for compliance with standards, health and safety, and client specifications.
8. Develop processes and procedures to enhance technical service delivery and supervise team training and mentoring.

Candidate Requirements

We seek motivated self-starters eager to face challenges and grow the organization’s technical capabilities through leadership.

Strong project management, budgeting skills, and knowledge of design and construction contracts like NEC are essential.

• Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering
• NGED TP141 accreditation
• Experience leading OHL design projects at transmission and distribution voltages, including wood pole and lattice steel towers
• Experience with folded steel pole OHL structures is desirable
• Proficiency in OHL design software such as PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, PLS-TOWER
• Understanding of CDM 2015 and Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations
• Full UK driving license
