Summary

Freedom Electrical Design is seeking a professional Principal Design Engineer (Overhead Line) to join our growing team. You will work on complex engineering projects supporting the country’s Net Zero targets, spanning generation, transmission, distribution, storage, and end-user applications.

This role offers a pathway to become Head of OHL Design within 1-2 years as the company expands. The job title aligns with our organizational grading, starting at Principal OHL Engineer.

You may base yourself at Leeds, Stowmarket, or London offices, with options for remote work. Travel will be required for meetings and site visits.

Key Responsibilities

1. Build and lead the OHL design team, collaborating with senior management and business development teams.
2. Manage all aspects of OHL design, including conductor sizing, insulation, lightning protection, line routing, and structural analysis using PLS-CAD, PLS-TOWER, or PLS-POLE.
3. Produce technical documents such as reports, specifications, drawings, and calculations, ensuring compliance with standards.
4. Prepare project proposals, including scope, resources, costing, and timelines.
5. Communicate company goals to the design team.
6. Provide technical leadership and coordinate across projects and teams.
7. Supervise the design lifecycle from concept to detailed design.
8. Review final documentation for compliance and quality standards.
9. Lead process improvements and mentor team members.

Candidate Requirements

We seek motivated self-starters eager to grow and lead. Essential skills include strong project management, commercial awareness, and experience with contract forms like NEC.

Qualifications and experience:

• Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering
• NGED TP141 accreditation
• Experience leading OHL projects at various voltages, including steel and wood pole structures
• Proficiency with OHL design software (e.g., PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, PLS-TOWER)
• Understanding of CDM 2015 and electrical safety regulations
• Full UK driving license
