Job Description

About Sequel

Sequel Med Tech is an early-stage company developing the next generation of precision drug delivery devices.

Job Overview

Sequel Med Tech is seeking an experienced data scientist to lead the design, development, and implementation of our long-term data strategy while supporting short-term data needs for our digital health portfolio. As our first Principal Data Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of healthcare for people living with diabetes, enhancing Sequel’s data and reporting capabilities, and working directly with product teams as a subject matter expert on feature design and implementation. The successful candidate will be a versatile data science and digital health professional, partnering with leadership to define vision and roadmaps, and collaborating with product teams in an agile, iterative manner. This role emphasizes shared ownership, accountability, individual and team empowerment, and a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement. Although initially an individual contributor role, there is potential for growth into a leadership position as the data science community develops.

Job Responsibilities and Essential Duties
  1. Collaborate with business leaders, technical teams, customers, and stakeholders to identify healthcare problems solvable by data, translating these into data science questions and engineering requirements.
  2. Communicate complex data insights effectively to clinical and business leaders to inform decision-making.
  3. Partner with technical teams to ensure data-driven functionalities are properly designed, implemented, tested, and compliant with quality, integrity, and privacy standards.
  4. Oversee data science initiatives including data acquisition, cleaning, feature engineering, modeling, evaluation, and deployment across healthcare and business domains.
  5. Ensure quality, impartiality, and accessibility of data products.
  6. Develop best practices in data science to support organizational growth.
  7. Mentor engineering peers and early-career data scientists and engineers, fostering technical expertise and awareness across the team.
Minimum Requirements
  • 10+ years in data science, including:
    • At least 3 years in healthcare, with experience in patient- and clinician-facing applications.
    • At least 5 years operating in an agile product environment.
    • 2 years managing teams or mentoring early-career data scientists and engineers.
  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Machine Learning, or a related field; Ph.D. preferred.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Proficiency in relevant programming languages, with strong data manipulation and analysis libraries.
    • Expertise in big data technologies and cloud platforms, with ability to learn new systems rapidly.
    • Experience bringing data products from inception to deployment, collaborating with product teams for customer solutions.
    • Understanding of clinical data structures, coding systems, and healthcare terminology; diabetes experience highly desirable.
    • Knowledge of healthcare regulations and ethical standards concerning patient data.
    • Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
    • Strong project management skills to lead cross-functional teams and deliver projects on time and within budget.
    • Knowledge of machine learning algorithms such as regression, classification, and clustering.
