Job Title

Principal Control & Instrumentation Engineer

Location

Barrow-in-Furness, Filton or Manchester (minimum 2 days onsite per fortnight). We offer hybrid and flexible working arrangements. Please speak to your recruiter about options for this role.

What you'll be doing:

1. Develop a functional design for the Vehicle Control solution for SSNA.
2. Coordinate with stakeholders to oversee the delivery of the vehicle control solution and strategy.
3. Support assurance activities in collaboration with the Office of the Chief Engineer.
4. Work with the engineering manager to deliver the vehicle control system, reporting progress via agile tools.
5. Ensure timely delivery of the engineering delivery plan.
6. Guide and instruct on engineering methods and processes.
7. Collaborate with the Engineering Delivery Team to develop technical solutions and nurture team development.
8. Engage with legacy stakeholders to develop solutions from known baseline designs.

Your Skills and Experiences:

Essential:

• Experience in developing C&I designs for large-scale systems, meeting functional, defence, and industrial standards.
• Experience managing non-functional requirements like EMC and shock compliance.
• Experience authoring or reviewing design documents such as I/O schedules, design specifications, interface control documents.
• Degree or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, Maths, or Science.

Desirable:

• Understanding control system architecture and communication protocols (e.g., RS-485, PROFIBUS).
• Knowledge of IEC 61508 - Functional Safety and safety evidence production.
• Experience with manoeuvring systems across industries.

The Platform Complex Systems Team:

Contribute to designing the Royal Navy's next-generation attack submarines, integrating legacy tech and new control concepts, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders. Relocation support available for eligible roles.
