The role focuses on producing, reviewing and coordinating highway and civil drawings for development schemes, from feasibility through to construction, with ownership of technical design packages and mentoring junior staff.

Principal Highway Technician required to join a leading independent Transport Planning and Highway Infrastructure consultancy based in Woking.The successful candidate will join an established Highway Infrastructure Design team delivering development-led highway schemes across the UK, supporting projects from early feasibility and planning through to detailed design, technical approval and construction.This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Highway Technician or Senior Highway Technician with strong AutoCAD and Civil 3D capability who is looking to take greater ownership of technical design packages, support junior members of the team and work on a varied portfolio of residential, commercial, mixed-use and major development projects.The Principal Highway Technician will work closely with Highway Engineers, Transport Planners, architects, developers, local authorities and wider project teams to produce practical, coordinated and buildable highway designs.

Producing, reviewing and coordinating highway and civil engineering drawings for development infrastructure schemesPreparing detailed drawing packages for Section 278 and Section 38 technical approval submissionsProducing highway layouts, general arrangements, setting-out drawings, long sections and cross sectionsPreparing construction details and associated technical plansUsing AutoCAD and Civil 3D to produce accurate, coordinated and buildable design informationDeveloping Civil 3D models including surfaces, alignments, corridors, grading and earthworksSupporting highway designs from feasibility and planning through to detailed design and constructionProducing junction layouts, access arrangements, servicing layouts and car park designsUndertaking or supporting swept path analysis and vehicle trackingAssisting with external works and associated infrastructure drawingsResponding to technical comments from highway authorities, clients and approving bodiesLiaising with local authorities and wider consultant teams throughout the technical approval processCoordinating designs with Transport Planners, Engineers, architects and other project disciplinesManaging assigned drawing packages and technical tasks against agreed programmesSupporting drawing issue schedules, document control and Common Data Environment processesHelping maintain and develop CAD standards, drawing templates and technical workflowsChecking technical work produced by junior technicians and graduatesMentoring and supporting less experienced members of the teamContributing to technical reviews, lessons learnt and continuous improvement within the design team
Significant experience as a Highway Technician, Senior Highway Technician, Civil Engineering Technician or similarPrevious experience within a UK consultancy, local authority or development infrastructure environmentStrong proficiency in AutoCADGood working knowledge of Civil 3DExperience with Civil 3D surfaces, alignments, corridors, long sections, cross sections, grading and earthworksExperience producing highway designs for residential, commercial, mixed-use or major development schemesExperience preparing Section 278 and Section 38 drawing packagesStrong understanding of UK highway design standards and technical approval processesKnowledge of Manual for Streets, DMRB and local authority highway standardsExperience with junction design, access layouts, swept path analysis and vehicle trackingAbility to take responsibility for technical drawing packages from initial design through to constructionStrong understanding of drawing coordination and buildabilityExperience working with BIM principles, Common Data Environments and document control processes would be advantageousKnowledge of drainage, external works or early-stage pipe network design would be beneficialExperience using AutoTrack Vehicle Tracking, SignPlot, Causeway Flow or similar software would be advantageousStrong attention to detail and high technical drawing standardsAbility to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary teamExperience checking work and mentoring junior techniciansStrong communication and organisational skillsCompetent with Microsoft OfficeFull UK driving licence beneficial for occasional site visitsWorking Hours: Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week.
