Principal Civil Technician Job Overview
- Producing, reviewing and coordinating highway and civil engineering drawings for development infrastructure schemes
- Preparing detailed drawing packages for Section 278 and Section 38 technical approval submissions
- Producing highway layouts, general arrangements, setting-out drawings, long sections and cross sections
- Preparing construction details and associated technical plans
- Using AutoCAD and Civil 3D to produce accurate, coordinated and buildable design information
- Developing Civil 3D models including surfaces, alignments, corridors, grading and earthworks
- Supporting highway designs from feasibility and planning through to detailed design and construction
- Producing junction layouts, access arrangements, servicing layouts and car park designs
- Undertaking or supporting swept path analysis and vehicle tracking
- Assisting with external works and associated infrastructure drawings
- Responding to technical comments from highway authorities, clients and approving bodies
- Liaising with local authorities and wider consultant teams throughout the technical approval process
- Coordinating designs with Transport Planners, Engineers, architects and other project disciplines
- Managing assigned drawing packages and technical tasks against agreed programmes
- Supporting drawing issue schedules, document control and Common Data Environment processes
- Helping maintain and develop CAD standards, drawing templates and technical workflows
- Checking technical work produced by junior technicians and graduates
- Mentoring and supporting less experienced members of the team
- Contributing to technical reviews, lessons learnt and continuous improvement within the design team
Principal Civil Technician Job Requirements
- Significant experience as a Highway Technician, Senior Highway Technician, Civil Engineering Technician or similar
- Previous experience within a UK consultancy, local authority or development infrastructure environment
- Strong proficiency in AutoCAD
- Good working knowledge of Civil 3D
- Experience with Civil 3D surfaces, alignments, corridors, long sections, cross sections, grading and earthworks
- Experience producing highway designs for residential, commercial, mixed-use or major development schemes
- Experience preparing Section 278 and Section 38 drawing packages
- Strong understanding of UK highway design standards and technical approval processes
- Knowledge of Manual for Streets, DMRB and local authority highway standards
- Experience with junction design, access layouts, swept path analysis and vehicle tracking
- Ability to take responsibility for technical drawing packages from initial design through to construction
- Strong understanding of drawing coordination and buildability
- Experience working with BIM principles, Common Data Environments and document control processes would be advantageous
- Knowledge of drainage, external works or early-stage pipe network design would be beneficial
- Experience using AutoTrack Vehicle Tracking, SignPlot, Causeway Flow or similar software would be advantageous
- Strong attention to detail and high technical drawing standards
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team
- Experience checking work and mentoring junior technicians
- Strong communication and organisational skills
- Competent with Microsoft Office
- Full UK driving licence beneficial for occasional site visits
Working Hours: Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week.
