Principal / Associate Director Ecologist - Manchester

Salary Range: Competitive salary of circa £43k for principal and circa £55k depending on experience.

Location: Manchester

Are you an experienced ecologist with strong business acumen seeking a new challenge? We are a dynamic and growing business looking for a self-motivated and positive Principal / Associate Director Ecologist to join our friendly team in Manchester. The successful candidate will manage a team of ecologists, delivering ecologically smart, commercially efficient, and cost-effective solutions across various projects.

  1. Manage contracts and support staff.
  2. Draft high-quality reports and review technical work.
  3. Support clients and design teams in problem-solving.
  4. Contribute to business development through costing, tendering, and diversifying services.
  5. Engage in a variety of projects to develop broad consultancy skills.

Candidate Requirements
  • Degree qualification in a relevant field.
  • Minimum of 8 years relevant experience.
  • Excellent knowledge of UK and European environmental legislation.
  • Strong fieldwork and report writing skills, including protected species surveys and ecological management plans.
  • At least 5 years experience in reviewing others’ work.
  • Competence in surveying and mitigating for protected species such as bats, badgers, birds, dormouse, great crested newts, reptiles, and water voles.
  • Hold EPS and/or conservation licenses for relevant species; registration on the class license scheme is preferred.
  • Proven project and staff management experience.
  • Ability to manage workload proactively and delegate appropriately.
  • Proficiency in customer service, training, and workshop delivery.
  • Full membership of CIEEM and preferably CEcol.
  • Self-starter with initiative and a full UK driving license.

Experience in high-level reptile mitigation and botany specialization are particularly desirable, with certification at FISC level 4 or above preferred.
