Job summary

Deploy Recruitment Group is seeking an experienced Senior Primary Design Engineer to lead high-quality primary engineering designs for HV substations and power infrastructure projects, mentoring junior engineers and coordinating with project managers and clients.

The role offers hybrid or remote work, exposure to UK and international standards, and the opportunity to contribute to major energy infrastructure while developing technical leadership within a FTSE 250 environment.

Qualifications

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
• Experience in primary design for HV substations (33kV–400kV).
• Chartered Engineer status desirable; knowledge of UK/international standards; strong communication.

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of primary engineering solutions for HV substations and related infrastructure.
• Produce and review primary design deliverables including layouts, GA drawings, equipment specifications, and technical reports.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, client specifications and safety requirements.
• Provide technical guidance, checking, and mentoring to junior engineers.
• Interface with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
• Support project planning, cost estimates, and risk assessment.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards.

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Senior Primary Design Engineer to lead and deliver high-quality primary engineering designs for HV substations and power infrastructure projects. Working for the specialist power engineering arm of a FTSE 250 company, you will play a key role in technical delivery, mentoring junior engineers, and working closely with project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams.

This role is available on a hybrid or remote basis, offering flexibility while remaining closely connected to project teams and clients.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of primary engineering solutions for HV substations and associated infrastructure
• Produce and review primary design deliverables including layouts, GA drawings, equipment specifications, and technical reports
• Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, client specifications, and safety requirements
• Provide technical guidance, checking, and mentoring to junior engineers
• Interface with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle
• Support project planning, cost estimates, and risk assessment
• Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards

About You

• Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
• Significant experience in primary design within HV substations (e.g. 33kV-400kV)
• Strong knowledge of UK / international standards and utility requirements
• Proven ability to lead design tasks and review the work of others
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• Chartered or working towards Chartered Engineer status (desirable)
