Job summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Primary Design Engineer to lead and deliver top-quality primary engineering designs for HV substations and power infrastructure projects. This role sits in the specialist power engineering arm of a FTSE 250 company, offering technical delivery leadership, mentoring, and close collaboration with project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams.

The role is available on a hybrid or remote basis, providing flexibility while staying connected to project

Qualifications

• Degree-qualified in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• Significant experience in primary design within HV substations (e.g. 33kV-400kV).
• Strong knowledge of UK / international standards and utility requirements.
• Proven ability to lead design tasks and review the work of others.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Chartered or working towards Chartered Engineer status (desirable).

Responsibilities

• Lead the design and development of primary engineering solutions for HV substations and associated infrastructure.
• Produce and review primary design deliverables including layouts, GA drawings, equipment specifications, and technical reports.
• Ensure designs comply with relevant standards, client specifications, and safety requirements.
• Provide technical guidance, checking, and mentoring to junior engineers.
• Interface with clients, contractors, and internal stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle.
• Support project planning, cost estimates, and risk assessment.
• Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and standards.

Working for the specialist power engineering arm of a FTSE 250 company, you will play a key role in technical delivery, mentoring junior engineers, and working closely with project managers, clients, and multidisciplinary teams.
