Job overview

Barts Health is one of the largest NHS trusts in the country and a leading healthcare provider. We are recruiting a Lead Cloud Engineer to maintain, operate, and scale the cloud infrastructure supporting the Barts Health Data Platform, which facilitates research and analysis within a Secure Data Environment (SDE). This role offers exposure to cutting-edge research involving patient and healthcare data, aligning with the NHS goal of using data to save lives. The Lead Cloud Engineer will be part of the Precision Medicine team within Informatics, supporting researchers and clinicians in developing data analysis projects to personalize patient treatment. For more information on the work, see the project details below.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Extensive experience with cloud services, ideally within the NHS, academia, or the private sector.
  • Significant experience in cloud engineering for data and compute infrastructure, and software deployment on public cloud providers.
  • Experience leading the delivery of public cloud solutions, preferably on Azure.
  • Experience using agile methodologies for infrastructure projects within a distributed team.
  • Proficiency in scripting or programming (Python, BASH, Terraform, GitHub, etc.).

Main duties of the job

Funded initially by Barts Charity, the project aims to establish a precision medicine program that unlocks the research potential of NHS patient data while ensuring responsible, legal, and ethical access, with patient engagement from the start.

The project utilizes modern cloud technology to build the Barts Health Data Platform and its Secure Data Environment (SDE), containing patient data that complies with security and governance standards. The SDE must be adaptable for various users and analysis activities, sourcing components from open-source projects like Azure TRE and making work publicly available.

The Lead Cloud Engineer will identify, investigate, implement, and manage cloud services and data management systems within the SDE. They will also plan, design, and customize the SDE for researchers and clinicians, working with contractors to support approved projects, continually evaluating and integrating open-source software while ensuring data security.
