Job Overview

Band 7/8a Clinical/Counselling Psychologist in Medical Psychology

Department of Medical Psychology – 0.7 Band 7 preceptorship / 8A post

We are looking for an enthusiastic and highly motivated clinical/counselling psychologist to join our well-established Department of Medical Psychology for up to seven sessions a week (three and a half days) days a week. The role will involve working within the haemoglobinopathy service. This is an already established service that has recently has gained extra funding to increase the provision of psychology. If more hours are wanted there is frequently the opportunity to provide bank sessions to the department within general medical and/or within other specialisms.

The haemoglobinopathy service is looking to increase its psychology provision, as they highly value psychological input and are keen to further expand the service. The role will offer the opportunity to work under the lead of a band 8b psychologist to further develop the role of psychology in the MDT, whilst also being based within a psychology department.

The role will include specialist assessment and intervention work with patients that live with sickle cell disease, thalassaemia and rare anaemias, consultation with MDT colleagues and attendance at annual review clinics in Leicester and Northampton, There is also the potential for inpatient work, input into ward rounds and staff training.

The role will also offer the successful candidate the opportunity to work one session a week with our General Medical Service, offering assessments, intervention and possible groups to patients presenting with a wide range of physical health conditions.

There are many opportunities within the department to become involved in collaborative working, training and supervision as we are linked to one of the largest acute trusts in the country. The department is friendly, supportive and flexible. We also place great emphasis on supervision and personal development, which is possible through working within a psychology department. We meet regularly for case presentations, clinical governance and business meetings. We also have a monthly peer group meeting and regular time-out to enable reflection and service development.

This post will be based predominantly at the Leicester General Hospital with some work at Leicester Royal Infirmary and occasional travel to other hospitals in the region such as Northampton General. The team includes clinical psychologists, assistants and excellent admin/clerical support. We also have close links with the Leicester Clinical Psychology Doctorate offering multiple placements each year and include opportunities for teaching. Leicester is a thriving multi-cultural city with good arts and sporting facilities that enjoys excellent motorway links to other major cities and easy access to the surrounding countryside.

For an informal discussion please contact Laura Ambrose (Consultant Clinical Psychologist) or Liz Pike (Lead for Haemoglobinopathy) on 0116 295 4555.

Job Description Summary (Main duties and responsibilities)

As detailed above the role will sit predominantly in the Haemoglobinopathy Team. This role is already well-established and the MDT haemoglobinopathy service value the input of psychology, with the psychologists working into clinics, ward rounds, case discussions and MDT meetings, as well as offering one to one assessment and support to patients in this service.

In the General Medical role there is the opportunity to work with a team of psychologists offering complex assessments, one to one intervention and groups to patients referred by multiple teams within UHL (including diabetes, cardiology, obstetrics and gynaecology and neurology). The team is also developing ways to support staff within UHL to offer level 2 psychological support for patients, which the successful applicant can become involved with.
