Job summary

Birmingham Women’s Hospital seeks an experienced Registered Nurse to join the Pre-Operative Team in a Band 5 role. The post supports elective gynaecological procedures, coordinating assessments, investigations and patient education within a women’s health environment.

The post collaborates with surgeons, anaesthetists, specialist nurses and admissions teams to plan patient care, manage caseloads, and deliver high-quality pre-operative services.

Qualifications

• 1st Level registered Nurse.

• Course in Mentoring and assessing in clinical practice.

Responsibilities

• Undertake comprehensive nurse-led pre-operative assessments for patients.
• Identify, assess and manage clinical risks that may affect a patient's suitability for surgery or anaesthesia.
• Arrange and perform relevant investigations including venepuncture, ECG recording, physiological observations and screening swabs.
• Review and interpret investigation results, escalating abnormal findings appropriately.
• Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams.
• Provide patients and their families with clear information regarding planned procedures, admission processes, recovery expectations and postoperative care.
• Support the development and implementation of individualised care plans.
• Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive documentation within electronic patient records.
• Ensure safeguarding concerns are recognised, acted upon and escalated in accordance with Trust policies.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and compassionate Registered Nurse to join the Pre-Operative Team at Birmingham Women's Hospital.

The Pre-Operative Department plays a vital role in preparing patients for elective gynaecological surgery, ensuring they are clinically optimised and fully informed prior to admission. Working within a specialist women's health environment, the successful candidate will provide high-quality nursing assessments, coordinate investigations, identify and elevate potential risks, and contribute to the safe and effective planning of patient care.

This is a rewarding role that requires excellent clinical assessment skills, strong organisational abilities, and a commitment to delivering patient-centred care. The post holder will work with multidisciplinary teams, including surgeons, anaesthetists, specialist nurses, admissions teams, and allied health professionals, to support patients throughout their surgical pathway.

The service supports a wide range of gynaecology specialties including Gynaecological Oncology, Endometriosis, Urogynaecology, Fertility, and General Gynaecology. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing their own caseload and clinics, ensuring patients receive timely assessments and appropriate interventions.

This role offers an excellent opportunity for nurses with an interest in women's health to develop specialist pre-operative assessment skills.

Main duties of the job
