Job summary

Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Band 8a Advanced Practitioner to lead same-day pre-operative anaesthetic assessments for complex cancer pathway patients at John Radcliffe Hospital. You will triage, perform comprehensive assessments, and contribute to a shared management plan to support the 62-day cancer pathway standard.

Job summary
The AP will provide clinical expertise and leadership to deliver same-day pre-operative anaesthetic assessments for complex cancer pathway patients. They will be responsible for triaging patients according to medical complexity, the performance of comprehensive preoperative assessments and utilisation of clinical reasoning to formulate a shared management plan before surgery to help deliver the 62-day cancer pathway standard.
The AP will run planned pre-operative assessment clinics for complex pre-operative patients listed for major surgery. They will be skilled in risk stratification, able to refer for targeted investigations, optimisation & high-risk multidisciplinary team input within the limits of their capability & subject to minimum supervisory standards (NHSE, Workplace supervision for advanced practice 2025 refresh) & clinical governance (Advanced Practice Governance Maturity Matrix; NHS employers).
The AP will respond to colleague queries for anaesthetic notes reviews at a rate agreed locally depending on clinical responsibilities and workload & within the limits of their capability.
The AP will be formally involved in national perioperative audit processes, including NCAPC & PQIP data collections.
The AP contributes to & shares responsibility for delivering educational programme for preoperative assessment nursing colleagues, covering clinical priorities, GIRFT standards for training & new policy guidance within the trust with support from anaesthetic colleagues.
