Job summary

Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in the Urgent Treatment Centre. The role is Band 8a with 30 hours per week, focusing on delivering high-quality care to both adult and paediatric patients with minor illnesses and injuries.

The post supports development into a clinical leader across four pillars of advanced practice, with 80% clinical time and 20% leadership, education and supervision. Closing date: 25 September 2026.

Qualifications

• Registered healthcare professional (NMC/HCPC/GPhC).
• First level degree (HEI Level 5 or 6) or equivalent, in undergraduate base profession.
• MSc L7 Advanced Practice or equivalent - in relevant Advanced Practice field.
• Specialist post-graduate education / qualifications, or training relevant to area of clinical practice for AP role (e.g. IRMER).
• Mentoring, Facilitating Workplace Learning or Clinical Supervision Qualification.
• Leadership Course or Qualification.
• Advanced Life Support Course relevant to speciality (as required).
• Professional ACP Credential - From recognised professional body pathways, or NHSE.

We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join our Urgent Treatment Centre as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner. This is a unique chance to become part of a supportive, dynamic, and forward-thinking team, delivering high-quality care to both adult and paediatric patients presenting with a wide range of minor illnesses and injuries.

Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, you will further develop your advanced clinical practice, working towards a high level of autonomy while collaborating effectively with colleagues across the wider healthcare system. You will demonstrate professional accountability, sound clinical judgement, and self-direction in accordance with your relevant professional code of conduct.

You will develop into a clinical leader within your specialist area of practice over a defined period, driving innovation to enhance patient care and improve the overall patient experience. You will demonstrate advanced clinical judgement, utilising specialist assessment skills, diagnostic reasoning, and the proficient use of specialised equipment to formulate differential diagnoses and deliver timely, evidence-based care. You will thrive in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, working efficiently and confidently while consistently providing safe, effective, and patient-centred care.

Main duties of the job

The Advanced Practitioner (AP) is an established autonomous clinician who delivers high-quality, patient-centred care in line with the NHS England Multi-Professional Framework for Advanced Practice (or other recognised service specific credential) and their professional regulatory standards. Working across all four pillars of advanced practice--Clinical, Leadership & Management, Education, and Research--the AP independently assess, diagnose, and manage patients, partnering with individuals, families, and the multidisciplinary team to meet health and wellbeing needs through evidence-based practice.

The AP is expected to maintain a culture of life-long learning and reflective practice, supported by clinical supervision and an up-to-date advanced practice portfolio. Job planning will ensure protected time to practice across all four pillars with an 80% clinical component to their role and 20% related to their leadership, service innovation and educational and supervision responsibilities.

Experience and Skills

• Significant experience and expertise within speciality of the recruiting area for the AP role

• Excellent clinical acumen and practical procedural skills (with evidence of competency and capability) as an independent practitioner, as per Job Description for role
• Experience of clinical audit, service evaluation or improvements in practice.
• Experience of change management
• Demonstrable evidence of research capability, or the application of research evidence to own clinical practice
• Existing technical clinical procedural skills relevant to clinical service
