Job summary

Birmingham Children’s Trust is recruiting for a Targeted Family Help Service leader to support district teams in delivering high-quality, needs-led assessments and timely interventions for children, young people, and families. The role requires strong leadership, safeguarding expertise, and proven ability to coordinate multi-agency work in a busy urban setting.

Qualifications

  • Significant experience working with children, young people and families.
  • Relevant qualification (NVQ4, SW qualification) completed or in progress.
  • Experience supervising or leading practitioners in Family Help or related service.
  • Strong multi-agency partnership experience.
  • Ability to analyse complex information, assess risk and make sound professional judgements.
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
  • Clear understanding of safeguarding, inequality, poverty and impact on families.
  • Resilience and reflective practice in professional development.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to overall case management within the team, including oversight and escalation.
  • Work with the Team Manager to allocate families to Lead Practitioners and ensure timely support.
  • Provide high-quality supervision/line management to Lead Practitioners.
  • Lead continuous improvement in the use of evidence-based help and support with children and families.
  • Support development and reflective practice aligned with supervision and practice standards.
  • Support Lead Practitioners to build relationships with children and promote education, development, safety and wellbeing.
  • Contribute to multi-agency partnerships with key agencies to support families in need.
  • Oversee practice through reflective supervision, audits and feedback.
  • Attend and contribute to supervision, team meetings and training sessions.
  • Champion the Trust Practice Model 'Connections Count' within team practice.
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion within the service.
  • Keep up to date with relevant legislation, policies and guidance.

Job description

We’re looking for a committed, people focused leaders to help drive high quality early help practice within our Targeted Family Help Service. If you’re passionate about impactful assessments, evidence based support, and building strong multi‑agency partnerships, this is a fantastic opportunity to influence real change. The successful applicants will, work in East of the city to support the district team managers to lead a team of Targeted Family Help Lead Practitioners. Your goal will be to deliver effective services to families in a relational based holistic manner, ensuring the best outcomes possible for children in Birmingham, you will actively collaboratewith partners, schools, community services and the voluntary sector, driving a clear ambition and a shared understanding of the benefits and impact of early identification and prevention for children.

Responsibilities of the role:
  • You will be contributing to the overall case management within the team including oversight and escalation.
  • The role involves working with the Team Manager to manage and allocate families to Lead Practitioners, ensuring that children and their families receive good quality needs-led assessments and timely support to meet their needs.
  • Provide high quality personal supervision/line management to Lead Practitioners
  • Lead and drive continuous improvement in the use of evidence-based help and support with children and families, raising the standards of practice in the team.
  • Take responsibility for own and support others’ professional development and reflective practice in line with professional development targets agreed in supervision and service practice standards.
  • Support Lead Practitioners to build positive relationships with children and young people and promote their education, development, safety, health, and wellbeing.
  • Contribute to the development of multi‑agency partnerships with key agencies to support children and families with identified needs to make positive changes.
  • Contribute to overseeing the practice within the team through reflective supervision, regular evidence-based auditing and feedback.
  • Attend, contribute to, and facilitate where appropriate; regular supervision, reflective group supervision, practice workshops, team meetings, appraisal reviews, training sessions and practice workshops as required.
  • Champion and model the Trust Practice Model ‘Connections Count’ to help ensure this is embedded in team practice.
  • Promote equality of opportunity, diversity and inclusion within the service.
  • Keep up to date with changes to relevant legislation, policies procedures and guidance and ensure Lead Practitioners do the same.
  • Meet the requirements for Family Help set out in Working Together and the National Framework.
  • Support the Team Manager by undertaking any other duties commensurate with the job or needs of the service.
  • To support and promote the welfare of children, young people, and their families in the city by creating high quality assessments and plans, providing evidence-based help and support, and leading effective multi‑agency working.
What will you need?
  • Significant experience working with children, young people and families, delivering positive change through early help or family support
  • A relevant qualification (e.g. NVQ Level 4 in Working with Families with Complex Needs, Social Work qualification, or equivalent – completed or working towards)
  • Experience of supervising or leading practitioners in a Family Help, Early Help or related service
  • Strong experience of multi‑agency working and partnership‑based practice
  • The ability to analyse complex information, assess risk and make sound professional judgements
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to build trusting, respectful relationships
  • A clear understanding of safeguarding, inequality, poverty and the impact of social disadvantage on families
  • Resilience, reflective capacity and the confidence to provide professional challenge when needed
