Queen Mary Practice is a friendly, family-run GP based at South Woodford Health Centre in London. We are seeking an experienced General Practice Nurse to deliver high-quality, patient-centred care within a busy primary care team.

You will have a minimum of three years’ GP nursing experience, current registration and the ability to work autonomously while collaborating with GPs and the wider multidisciplinary team to promote safe, evidence-based care.

Job summary

We are seeking an experienced and compassionate General Practice Nurse to join our busy and supportive primary care team. The successful candidate will provide high-quality, patient-centred nursing care across a broad range of general practice services, working collaboratively with GPs and the wider multidisciplinary team.

A minimum of three years proven experience as a General Practice Nurse in a GP/primary care setting is essential, together with current professional registration and demonstrable experience across key primary care nursing services.

We are looking for a confident, clinically competent and organised nurse who can work autonomously while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team. Above all, you will demonstrate a compassionate, professional and patient-centred approach and a strong commitment to delivering safe, effective and evidence-based care to the local community.

Main duties of the job

The role includes long-term condition management, wound care, immunisations, cervical screening, new baby checks, NHS Health Checks, phlebotomy, travel health, health promotion and other core primary care services. You will also support the assessment and management of acutely unwell patients, maintain accurate clinical records and contribute to clinical governance, audit, quality improvement and continuing professional development.

We care for a registered population of approximately 6,500 patients, serving a diverse local community across South Woodford and the surrounding areas. Job responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • Provide comprehensive nursing assessment, treatment, care planning and health advice.
  • Undertake wound assessment, dressing and management, including complex and chronic wounds.
  • Perform venepuncture/phlebotomy.
  • Undertake cervical screening in accordance with national guidance.
  • Carry out 68 week baby checks and provide appropriate health and parenting advice.
  • Conduct NHS Health Checks and other health screening.
  • Support the management and annual review of long-term conditions, including diabetes, asthma, COPD, hypertension and coronary heart disease.
  • Administer childhood and adult immunisations, including seasonal influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations, in accordance with current guidance.
  • Undertake travel health assessments and provide travel vaccinations within scope of competence.
  • Provide appropriate contraceptive and sexual health advice.
  • Undertake ear irrigation/ear wax removal where appropriately trained.
  • Record and monitor clinical observations and recognise changes in a patient's condition.
  • Identify and appropriately escalates patients who are acutely unwell or deteriorating.
  • Administer medications and treatments safely in accordance with prescriptions and practice protocols.
  • Provide patients with clear information regarding their condition, treatment and self-management.
  • Promote preventative healthcare, including healthy lifestyle advice, smoking cessation and weight management.
  • Provide chaperoning and clinical support to GPs and other healthcare professionals.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential and contemporaneous clinical records.
  • Adhere to safeguarding, infection prevention and control, information governance and clinical governance requirements.
  • Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement activities, practice meetings and continuing professional development.
  • Work collaboratively with the wider practice and multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality patient care.

Qualifications
Essential
  • Registered Nurse with current professional registration.
  • Minimum of 3 years' proven experience working as a General Practice Nurse within a GP/primary care setting.
  • Experience working independently within a busy primary care environment.
  • Demonstrable experience in cervical cytology, new baby checks and NHS Health Checks.
  • Experience in long-term condition management
  • Experience in wound care, including complex and chronic wounds.
  • Competence in phlebotomy/venepuncture.
  • Experience administering adult and childhood immunisations.
  • Excellent clinical assessment and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to recognise and appropriately escalates deteriorating patients.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong understanding of confidentiality, safeguarding, infection control and clinical governance.
  • Commitment to continuing professional development.
Desirable
  • Experience in travel health and travel vaccinations.
  • Experience providing contraceptive and sexual health services.
