Job summary

National Physical Laboratory (NPL) invites applications for a permanent Power Systems Research Engineer/Scientist to join the Power Networks Team within the Electromagnetic Technologies Group. This early‑career role focuses on power systems measurement science, instrumentation, data analysis and grid monitoring in a collaborative research environment.

You will set up lab testbeds, develop software for automated configuration and data analysis, and help design new measurement methods for power

Qualifications

  • Degree in a STEM discipline, preferably electrical/electronic engineering or physical sciences.
  • Experience in electrical/electronic engineering, instrumentation, measurement science, or a related field.
  • Experience in power system analysis, modelling, power quality, or related topics.
  • Experience with Matlab, LabVIEW, or C/C++ and scientific writing.

Responsibilities

  • Setting up and safely operating laboratory testbeds for electrical measurements related to power grid phenomena.
  • Developing software for automatic hardware configuration and data analysis.
  • Designing, developing and testing new measurement methods and instrumentation for power quality and grid stability monitoring.
  • Preparing and deploying instrumentation for field measurement campaigns across the UK and Europe.
  • Collaborating with international research organisations and universities within R&D projects.
  • Communicating research outcomes through publications, reports, posters and presentations.
