Job Description
The salary for this role is £40,609 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days a week, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.
This role is based at the following site; Culham, Oxfordshire.
This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.
The Role

As Power Systems Engineer, you will provide technical expertise on projects involving custom complex power conversion systems, including control, protection, and related subsystems for fusion systems.
In this role, you will use your specialist knowledge to manage work packages and technical studies for enhancement and decommissioning programs, while also advising on technical solutions and design within your area of expertise.
If you are keen to provide technical expertise on fusion system projects from concept through to detailed design and have strong awareness of workplace safety practices and processes, along with excellent communication, technical writing, and interpersonal skills, we would love to hear from you.
Key Accountabilities:
- Provide technical expertise on fusion system projects from concept through detailed design, including enhancement programs for UKAEA facilities and future fusion devices, with a focus on critical plant projects that may have site-wide or international impact.
- Ensure timely delivery of projects within scope, specifications, and budgets, contributing to planning and managing resources effectively.
- Act as a technical advisor on design solutions, plant operations, and fault-finding, while supporting the development and formal implementation of technical processes and operating procedures.
- Use engineering expertise and analysis tools to evaluate systems, select appropriate methodologies, and independently identify and solve technical challenges.
- Communicate technical information clearly through reports, presentations, and publications; adapt communication to diverse audiences and contribute to the mentoring and development of engineers.
Qualifications
Essential:
- Relevant electrical engineering degree or equivalent.
- Background in power systems or power electronics.
- Ability to perform exploratory design calculations using first principles.
- Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties.
- Experience with working to design standards and applying industry best practice.
Desirable:
- Practical approach combined with a good understanding of basic electrical and electronics engineering theory.
- Experience of working on power conversion systems.
- Knowledge and experience in Matlab/Simulink.
