Job summary

National Energy System Operator Limited in the UK is seeking a Power Systems Engineer to join the Connection Operability Assessment team. You will work with network owners and customers to craft efficient connection solutions that meet customer needs and the Grid Code, with hybrid work from office and home.

You will apply power system analysis, modelling tools (DIgSILENT, PSSE) and SQSS knowledge to support connections studies, scenarios, and technical reports while collaborating across NESO.

Qualifications

  • Experience undertaking power system analysis and connections studies.
  • Knowledge of SQSS and grid code requirements.
  • Experience with power system modelling tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory and PSSE.
  • Strong stakeholder management and report writing skills.
  • Right to work in the UK by start of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Transmission Owners to ensure designs for new connections comply with SQSS.
  • Produce technical appendices for onshore/offshore connections to the transmission network.
  • Support customers in specifying scenarios for bespoke technical assessments (SSCI/SSTI) and review technical reports.
  • Assist contract and compliance managers with technical queries during the connections process.
  • Create Construction Planning Assumptions using probabilistic modelling.
  • Lead/participate in technical initiatives within NESO.

About the Role

As a Power Systems Engineer in the Connection Operability Assessment teams, you will work in partnership with network owners and customers as part of the connections process to develop efficient connection solutions that meets both the customer needs and the technical standards (SQSS and Grid Code). We facilitate the connection of generation and demand onto the system, enabling the UK to meet its net zero system operation ambition whilst ensuring the network remains safe. We are soon going to be embarking on the exciting world of connections reform and are looking to grow the England & Wales and Scotland teams which will have a critical role to play in the future design of the electricity system facilitating the pathway to net zero. This role can be based from Warwick and Glasgow, and we continue to offer hybrid working from office and home. We are open to full time and part time applicants, as well as flexible working arrangements.


Key Accountabilities for Power System Engineers


  • Collaborate with Transmission Owners to ensure the designs for new connections are compliant with the SQSS requirements.

  • Produce technical appendices for new onshore and offshore connections to the transmission network.

  • Support customers in the specification of scenarios required for bespoke technical assessments e.g., SSCI/ SSTI and reviewing technical reports to ensure that technical performance is adequate.

  • Support the customer contract managers and compliance managers with addressing technical queries from customers throughout the connections process.

  • Support other departments within ESO on technical queries relating to the connections process.

  • Create Construction Planning Assumption (CPAs) using the probabilistic modelling tool to create the generation backgrounds against which technical analysis will be carried out during the connections process and other initiatives.

  • Contribute/ lead the technical initiative within NESO

  • Experience of undertaking power system analysis and connections studies with a good understanding of the principles of power system planning and operations

  • Experience of using Power System Modelling and Analysis tools e.g., DIgSILENT Power Factory, PSSE etc.

  • Good understanding of SQSS

  • Strong communicator with excellent stakeholder management and report writing skills.
