Job summary

Avanti is seeking a Database Engineer focused on PostgreSQL to own performance across live data platforms. You will work with developers and DevOps to optimize data access, tune queries and scale the system while shaping robust database solutions.

The role involves improving schemas, indexes and storage of large historical data, designing views, and ensuring safe production changes. 100% remote within the UK, permanent, full-time.

Qualifications

• Hands-on PostgreSQL in production environments.
• Strong SQL skills and query tuning.
• Experience with indexing and execution plans.
• Knowledge of relational data modelling, constraints and data integrity.
• Experience handling large datasets and efficient search/retrieval.
• Understanding of transactions, locking and concurrency.
• Experience making safe production changes to databases.
• Collaborates with software developers to improve app DB access.
• Ability to investigate problems and propose practical solutions.

Responsibilities

• Review and improve PostgreSQL schemas, indexes, constraints and SQL queries.
• Investigate slow queries using plans, stats and logs.
• Optimise joins and access patterns.
• Collaborate with developers to improve DB design before features release.
• Improve organization of historical data, archiving and retrieval.
• Design views and materialised views where suitable.
• Investigate locking and concurrency issues.
• Plan safe schema changes and migrations.
• Measure performance and storage growth.
• Help establish database design standards across the team.
• Work with DevOps on monitoring, backup and recovery.
