The Department of Meteorology in the University of Reading is a thriving community of over 200 academics and research scientists and is a world leader in weather and climate research. We are seeking to recruit a curious, enthusiastic, and critical thinking researcher to perform an assimilation run with the global ocean sea ice model NEMO-SI and the Parallel Data Assimilation Framework (PDAF) to create a physically constrained sea ice reanalysis. This work will be carried out under the NERC project (Constraining Reanalysis of sea Ice by correcting Seasonal feedbacks in the Polar regions) with co-operation with UCL London and international project partners.

In this project, you will

  • Elaborate model shortcomings and potential data issues by analysing the differences between model and data with respect to the sea ice volume budget.
  • Improve the following physical processes in SIspecifically selected to address the outlined shortcoming regarding winter growth and summer melt processes in a climate model:
    • grease ice formation
    • sea ice ridging scheme
    • snow processes
    • floe size distribution
    • melt water drainage.
  • Produce a sea ice reanalysis using an advanced model setup and advanced sea ice thickness data, leading to recommendations on how to setup the sea ice component in future climate simulations.
  • Report on progress and results of the research through appropriate methods, including papers for submission to scientific journals, presentation of results at conferences, workshops etc.
  • Maintain awareness of current progress in relevant research areas to ensure that the research remains at the cutting edge.
  • Liaise with collaborators from other parts of the project on a regular basis, including travel to visit project partners as required.
You Will Already Have

  • A PhD or equivalent experience in a relevant area of physical environmental science
  • Skills in either numerical modelling of physical systems or in data assimilation
  • Working knowledge of, and mathematical representation of, heat, mass, and momentum transfer
  • A publication and presentation record appropriate to career stage
  • Personal skills to work both independently and as part of a team
