Job Description

The Department of Meteorology at the University of Reading, a leader in weather and climate research with over 200 academics and research scientists, is seeking a curious, enthusiastic researcher to perform an assimilation run with the global ocean sea ice model NEMO-SI 3 and the Parallel Data Assimilation Framework (PDAF). The goal is to create a physically constrained sea ice reanalysis. This project is part of the NERC CRISP initiative, in collaboration with UCL London and international partners.

Key Responsibilities
  • Analyze model shortcomings and data issues related to sea ice volume budget discrepancies.
  • Enhance physical processes in SI 3, focusing on winter growth and summer melt, including grease ice formation, sea ice ridging, snow processes, floe size distribution, and meltwater drainage.
  • Create a sea ice reanalysis using advanced models and data, providing recommendations for future climate simulations.
  • Communicate progress through scientific publications, conferences, and workshops.
  • Stay updated with current research developments.
  • Collaborate regularly with project partners, including travel as needed.
Candidate Requirements
  • PhD or equivalent in physical environmental science or related field.
  • Experience in numerical modeling or data assimilation.
  • Knowledge of heat, mass, and momentum transfer processes.
  • Publication and presentation record appropriate to career stage.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
